He’s drunk. Somewhere in him, he knows this; he’s had far too much for him not to be wanked off his face. But somewhere else in his brain, the one that isn’t working too well right now, is telling him he’s ok and that another pint would be a super idea. He hasn’t actually realised that if he’s up to the stage of using the word ‘super,’ that he should have stopped drinking at least two pints ago.
He’s drinking so not to think, to analyse his brain too much, but the problem is, its actually making him do it more. He’s looking, no, staring at the boy. And he wants him. He hates how he refers to him as the boy, even though he’s older than him, but he still wants him. He wants to get up and stalk over to him, take his face in his hands and kiss him until they can’t breathe any more.
So he puts his hands on the table and pushes himself up. He stumbles past the chairs and begins to stalk. But he suddenly finds that after many pints, stalking isn’t an option. He barely manages three steps before he feels himself begin to wobble.
He sees the floor coming closer to him but the boy is suddenly by his side, holding him tightly.
‘Alex? Al, are you ok?’
His eyes are blurring and the boy is fading. And before he knows it, he’s passed out in the boy’s arms.
‘Guys!’
The boy yells and the group come to rescue their waned friend.
The Next Day.
When Will wakes up, he’s confused for a moment; that is until he remembers they ended the night at Di and Omar’s flat. The spare room wall suddenly becomes familiar, as do the bodies beside him, Sarah and Charlie. Which means Laurie is in with Omar and Di and Siobhan, Chen and Dan will be passed out in room three…on the third double bed…with Alex. Alex, who went from sober, hardly drinking anything, to downing pints one after another. What the hell happened?
He hated how the nights ended, always the same-shared beds. He knew he still wouldn’t do anything if he were in with Siobhan, Dan or Al, or Chen, Siobhan and Al; but the thought of waking up with Al made his stomach flutter.
He hated how Alex made him such a girl.
He loved how Alex made him such a girl.
He dragged himself out of bed and pulled on some trousers.
Why was he so obsessed with this skinny but beautiful boy that had so much unknown sex appeal? Not only was he younger than Will, but he was one of his brother’s best friends. His baby bother’s best friends! He knew it was wrong but he didn’t want to stop it, a strange morose part of him liked it. He pulled on a t-shirt and made his way out of the room and through the flat.
Five minutes later
He sat himself at the table, coffee in hand. He inhaled the hot brown liquid, hoping that something from the smell would hit his brain cells directly and kick them into gear. He blew gently along the top before taking a sip. He sighed as he felt it sail along his tongue and down his throat. He loved the way a hot coffee could really warm you from the inside to the out.
He took another sip before he realised he’d been joined by someone else. He looked up and smiled at his companion.
‘Morning Al.’
Alex nodded and crooked his own greeting. Will chuckled.
‘Bit of a hangover there, Al?’
Another nod. He watched him grab his own cup of coffee and sit himself opposite Will. He took a big gulp before clearing his throat.
‘That’s better.’
Will laughed again. They clearly both couldn’t function without their morning cup of coffee. He took another sip of his own before looking at his friend.
‘Al… what happened last night?’
The younger boys head shot up from looking at his mug to stare at him.
‘What do you mean?’
He watched him pull his glasses from his eyes and rub at his face roughly. He then cleaned his glasses on his white t-shirt before pushing them back onto his face.
Will sighed gently.
‘You weren’t drinking, then bam, pissed off your face. So I’m asking, what happened?’ He lowered his cup to the tabletop and forced eye contact. ‘Hmmm?’
His friend shrugged and looked away, pushing himself from his chair. He walked over to the fridge, his jeans riding low on his hips. Will’s eyes followed every move.
Al rubbed at his chin as he looked for something to eat.
‘Toast?’
He yanked out the bread and low fat spread, knocked the door shut and dumped his find on the bench.
Will nodded. ‘Please.’ He paused slightly. ‘But you still didn’t answer my question.’
Alex sighed as he pulled the toaster towards him. He pulled four slices of wholemeal bread from its packet and slotted them into the machine. He pushed down the button and turned to rest against the bench.
‘You know when you suddenly feel so empty and you just want the pain to go away?’ He ran his fingers through his hair. ‘I felt really lost last night Will, and really alone. So I drank to make it go away.’ He sighed and shrugged. ‘I don’t know, no big deal.’
Will stop up and moved towards him.
‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
The younger lad looked up, eyes sparkling.
‘Because it’s hard to talk to someone you love.’
Will nodded. ‘I know. I mean, telling your family your hurting is never easy but- ‘ He stopped as Alex shook his head.
‘No, Will. I mean, someone you love.’ He brushed his hand gently against his before turning back to the toaster.
Will felt the air leave the room. This was certainly a development he hadn’t expected.
He gently turned his crush round.
‘Why were you hurting?’
His friend sighed. ‘Because I’m not with you.’
An inhale of breath.
This wasn’t happening, this could not be happening.
‘But last night you were watching someone out on the floor.’
Alex shook his head. ‘I was watching everyone.’ He paused and sighed. ‘To stop myself looking at you.’
Will blinked and traced his knuckles gently down Al’s cheek.
‘You’re beautiful Alex, so beautiful.’ He leaned in gently and pressed his lips against the ones of his obsession. He felt them respond immediately and he wrapped his left hand tightly in his hair to pull him closer.
The toast jumped up as the button hit against the metal. They recoiled apart in shock. They looked over to the doorway to see Charlie staring at them.
‘What the fuck is going on?’
Alex bit his lip. ‘It’s not what it looks like, Chase.’
Will turned to do his own staring at him.
‘What?’
‘No, wait, Will, I didn’t mean - I just…’
‘You know something Al, just forget it.’ He sighed, shaking his head. ‘I never thought I’d get that from you.’ He walked away from him and pushed passed Charlie who grabbed his shoulder.
‘What the fuck? Will?’
He shook him off. ‘Just don’t, ok?’ And with that, he walked out of the room and out of the house.
