Her fingers drummed the coffee table lightly and she tried desperately to wipe the permanent furrow in her eyebrows. He thought she was leaving him. She could admit to being confused about her... whatever the hell she had with Methos, but leaving Nathan had never been an option for her. So when the words came from him, so convinced, she nearly ( Read more... )

Nathan landed on the balcony to Cass's apartment just as the sun was setting. He peeked inside for a moment, his hands shoved into the pocket of his overcoat. She was, as always beautiful as she sat at the couch, her fingers drumming on the coffee table. And just the sight of her made his chest tighten and his heart hurt as he was almost certain that she was pulling away from him and attempting to leave him.

However, he pushed open the sliding door and wiped any of that emotion from his features as he was so talented at doing. "Cass..." His voice, however, came out quieter and more uncertain than he had intended it to.

Her eyes flew up and she stood, smoothing out her skirt in a nervous habit. Green eyes searched his and could immediately see that he was shut off. It made the ache in her heart even worse and she suddenly found herself very angry. At herself. At Methos. And even a bit at Nathan.

Her eyes closed. "Come in," Her voice very much reflected his, quiet and very uncertain. She wanted to hold him, or kiss him, or scream at him. Something. ANYTHING. But all she did was stand there, uncertain and scared that maybe she had realized there was a problem just a moment too late.

He closed the glass door behind him and stepped into the apartment. He looked down, sideways, down again, and finally to Cass. His hands were shoved into his over coat pockets. He wanted to tell her to make it quick and get ti over with, but his urging her on even the little bit in their conversation online had ripped his heart in two.

He finally looked down again without saying anything. He was terrified of what would come out of his mouth... that he would try to push her away before she could push him away. He already felt far too distant.

Slowly, she made her way in front of him until she stood close enough to touch. Her teeth dug into her lower lip and she slowly slid her arms around his waist; burying her head into his neck; the tears already coming, unbidden. There was this rift and she could feel it ever widening. She'd felt this pain before, but this time was different. Sharper. More... just more.

"I can't bear to lose you," The words were soft, pleading. Hadn't that been what she'd been trying to avoid all this time? Losing him? Hurting him like he was so obviously hurting right now? Isn't that why she agreed to hide from Roland? For him?

She couldn't look at up him again and see that wall. It would break her and it wasn't something that she was certain she could recover from.
