PATIENT FILE

Sex: M
Age: 25
D.O.B.: January 4
Blood Type: B

Height: 6 ft 0.25 in / 184 cm
Weight: 165 lbs / 75 kg
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond

Birthplace: Riverside, Iowa
Nationality: American

Family History: His father, John, died when Bill was still a baby. He and his older brother, Daniel, were primarily raised by their mother, Wendy, and stepfather, Fred. Mother was frequently absent for work-related reasons. Stepfather has a history of alcoholism. Brother left home during his teens, when Bill was approximately 11 yrs old.

Medical History: At age 12, suffered from fractured ribs and a broken arm, stated at the time to be from falling out of a tree, now suspected to be child abuse. At age 17, suffered from a broken ankle and torn medial collateral ligament, incurred from a motorcycle accident. At age 21, suffered from a fracture of zygomatic arch, incurred from a bar fight. At age 25, shortly before his admittance, patient suffered bruising on his neck from being choked, largely healed. No serious illnesses.

Bill suffers from severe delusions of grandeur, and believes that he is really James T. Kirk, a fictional "starship captain" from the television show Star Trek. He has adapted details of his own personal history to construct himself as an "alternate universe" version of the character (i.e. he is James T. Kirk, if Kirk's father had died when he was young) to explain away any contradictions or discrepancies.

Signs of these delusions can be traced back to approximately three years ago, but became serious only a week before his arrival to Landel's Institute, believed to have been prompted by his expulsion from the NROTC program.

Current Status: Bill has not shown any progress since being admitted. Although his behaviour has been largely cooperative and friendly, he has demonstrated aggression against staff members when his delusions were challenged, requiring a sedation in one instance. Bill has also found and/or convinced other patients willing to support him in his delusions as members of his "crew."

Working Diagnosis: Grandiose Delusional Disorder

"REAL" LIFE
Life History: William Shatner was born five years after his brother, Daniel, and had not yet reached his first birthday when his father, John, was killed in action as a United States Marine. His mother, Wendy, remarried a few years after her husband's death to a man named Fred, who helped raised the boys for the bulk of the childhoods. "Uncle" Fred was alcoholic and abusive, especially in the absence of Wendy, whose work often took her out of the country.

Both boys idealized the memory of their father. Of special interest was John Shatner's love of the television show Star Trek, which was a great influence on Bill as he was growing up. He viewed the characters as substitute role models, and particularly latched onto the protagonist, Captain James T. Kirk. The fact that John had named his second son after Kirk's actor helped to encourage Bill's self-identification with the character.

A little before Bill's twelfth birthday, his brother left home after a fight with their stepfather, who wanted to sell John's prized classic car while Wendy was away. Reeling from abandonment, Bill earned his first mark on his juvenile record by stealing the car and destroying it. After that, the previously well-behaved boy began acting out at school and at home. Bill's behaviour through his teens and early 20's, during which time he added more offenses to his criminal record, most commonly public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Despite all this, Bill maintained a high GPA in high school and community college, once stating "Jim Kirk never flunked anything" as his justification, although he did quit college after two years out of disinterest. He floated through life until the age of 22, when an old friend of his father's talked him into shaping up and joining the maritime academy from which John Shatner had graduated. There, Bill performed at the top of his class and with few misdemeanours, although he would sometimes playfully refer to himself as "James T. Kirk" or refer to the school as "Starfleet Academy." These were normally taken by his fellow midshipmen as the quirks of a hardcore Star Trek fan, as Bill remained largely lucid.

Three years into his program, he met Aidan Penn, an instructor at the academy. Bill felt an immediate connection to Penn, believing that the man greatly resembled the character of "Spock" and would often treat him as such. His actual break from reality came a short while later, after Bill was suspended for academic misconduct. Unable to deal with returning to his constrictive life back in Iowa, Bill constructed a complicated grandiose delusion in which he was James Kirk, and had raised himself from the status of disgraced student to saviour of the galaxy. His family was contacted after he got into a physical altercation with Aidan Penn while in this state, and it was Wendy Shatner who made the decision to send Bill to Landel's Institute.
