She slammed her glass down on the table, startling him. It was obvious that she wasn't liking this, their situation. She hated it. She wanted to do something about it; she wanted to grab it and throw bottles at it and scream at it. She couldn't even scream.
He wanted to call out to her, to say her name. Instead, he reached out to touch her shoulder.
She didn't push him away. He could tell she was tired of being frustrated for so long. A single, stupid mistake that affected them so profoundly... and yet, they couldn't do a thing.
It'll be okay, he wanted to say. Meiko, it'll be okay.
She looked up at him -- no, at the people behind him. He glanced back, acknowledging the programmers waiting for him. He caught her gaze.
After we're fixed, let's sing together.
She smiled.
He smiled back -- he had to do that a lot, nowadays -- before turning to follow them out the room.
