Title; In the Middle of the Night
Fandom/Pairing; KyuHae
Rating; R?
Summary; Donghae finds Kyuhyun in the park in the middle of the night. He has no pulse. He has scales. What the hell?
Author's Note; This is possibly one of the strangest things I've written. It used to be a lot stranger, and it had some-ahem-smut. But I decided that it would be too weird. Hence, I toned it down, and this is what it became Take it as you will. It's weird, I've already warned you. But I like KyuHae a lot. It's my second favorite Donghae pairing, after EunHae.

Donghae feels the hard exterior he thought was Kyuhyun’s skin.
He looks down.
Scales.
But he doesn’t retract his hand from the sleeping boy’s neck. He just stands there, forgetting how he thought it was weird that he’d found Kyuhyun asleep under this huge weeping willow in the park by Donghae’s house in the middle of the night. Then again, it’s weird that Donghae is out of his bed and at the park at this hour.
It’s too dark for Donghae to see that well, but he’s definitely sure that the texture under his fingers isn’t skin, but scales. And he knows he’s touching Kyuhyun.
But then something kicks in.
Donghae can’t find a pulse.
Time to panic.
His own pulse shoots up.
He starts fumbling, not sure what to do. The first thing he does, without thinking much, is put his arms under Kyuhyun and lifts him up. Donghae steps are frantic and rushed as he carries the younger man towards the direction of his house.
Kyuhyun’s dangling arm scrapes Donghae’s side. Scales there, too. Scales everywhere.
Why is Kyuhyun covered in scales?
Is Donghae just dreaming?
Even if he is dreaming, he has this feeling that he needs to help Kyuhyun. Save him, even if he’s already dead. But Kyuhyun can’t be dead-Donghae won’t allow it.
But despite the lack of a pulse, Kyuhyun’s body seems to be burning up. But no sweat, no breathing, no nothing except dry heat and scales. Still, there were those scales that cause even more confusion for Donghae.
As he climbs the steps to his apartment building, Donghae is starting to struggle with holding his friend. He kicks the buttons on the elevator, and now that he has fluorescent lights to help his tired eyes and keep him out of the dark, he can see his friend’s skin.
He can see the scales-the color of Kyuhyun’s skin, yet it wasn’t skin at all. They’re arranged in rows, like a fish. Donghae almost laughs at the twisted irony.
If his nickname is ‘Fish’ then why isn’t he the one with the freaky fish-like scales all over his body? Why is it Kyuhyun? If he tells their other friends, it’s very likely that they’ll tease the two of them about it. Or Donghae won’t be ‘Fish’ ever again, but instead Kyuhyun will be. And Donghae likes being ‘Fish’.
Kyuhyun’s body is getting even warmer, but still there’s no other kind of sign to tell Donghae that he might still be alive.
Donghae’s glad that it’s so late at night and none of his neighbors are out in the halls, or on their way in and out of their homes to work or school or whatnot. He doesn’t want them to wonder what the hell is going on and why Donghae’s carrying a freaky fish boy back to his apartment. Because it really is an odd sight, especially as Donghae somehow manages to hunt down his keys from his pocket and open the door.
He pushes the door to a close with his back and saunters over to the couch, and with a sigh, he puts Kyuhyun down, careful not to knock his head.
Donghae bounces on his heels, trying to think. “Um…um…water!”
He runs into the kitchen, fumbling with the cupboards until he takes a glass into his hand, twitching as he turns the sink on to fill it with water. Something tells him that he should be calling an ambulance, or putting Kyuhyun in his car to get to the hospital, but instead he listens to another part of him that says water is more important.
Donghae knows it seems ridiculous but as he trips over himself running back to his friend, he erases the doubt of the water in his hand.
Tipping Kyuhyun’s head back, he opens his mouth and lets the water pour in. Just a little, though, since Donghae doesn’t want to drown his friend.
He puts his hand to Kyuhyun’s forehead, and senses the temperature shoot up so that he’s even hotter than before. Panic seizes him once again as he places the glass on the floor and hovers over Kyuhyun.
“Uh…um, hospital,” Donghae decides, just about to stand up.
Out of nowhere, two hands shoot up from underneath him, grabbing Donghae by the hair and pulling his face down until his felt his lips crash with Kyuhyun’s.
Kyuhyun’s hold is impossible to break, trapping Donghae in a violent kiss. Donghae’s hands are frozen, not knowing at all how to react.
It isn’t until he feels Kyuhyun teeth push into his lip that he really tries to escape, but that hold on him is so strong that all he can do is groan in pain as he bleeds into Kyuhyun’s mouth. It hurts so much that Donghae starts shaking, especially with the added agony that now Kyuhyun’s sucking on his bleeding lip.
Kyuhyun starts a series noises, moaning and grunting as he keeps drinking the red liquid that’s flowing from his victim.
The force Donghae’s using to try to free himself weakens, his head throbbing as he begins to feel woozy. It’s getting harder and harder to breathe.
It feels like an eternity has passed when the tight grasp in his hair releases. Donghae flies backwards, flailing against the opposite end of the couch until he bounces and hits the floor.
He reaches up to touch his mouth, which is almost numb, although he can feel the sting, just barely there.
Kyuhyun sighs before sitting up, and Donghae can see his blood on the younger man’s face, now being smeared by lanky fingers. Kyuhyun licks his lips and throws his head back for a second, and he doesn’t look human-which he probably isn’t. Donghae has never been so terrified.
He feels his body quivering again as Kyuhyun’s eyes rest on him.
“Sorry,” he speaks, wiping more blood off with the back of his hand.
Donghae’s eyes are wide, and the pain is starting to rush back to his lip now. It’s like his face is on fire.
“I just needed blood,” Kyuhyun licks his hand, cleaning it.
“What…?” Donghae puts his hand to his lip, noticing that now it’s bleeding even more. “Are you a vampire or something?”
“Nope,” Kyuhyun shrugs.
“Then what the fuck was that?” he attempts to make his voice sound tougher, but he can’t deny that he is still frightened out of his wits, and his attempt was futile.
“I needed blood,” says Kyuhyun. “It’s what revives me.”
Confusion mixes with the fear inside Donghae.
“First, water. Second, blood.”
“That makes so much sense,” Donghae mutters, sarcasm mixed in.
“I’m glad you think so.”
As Kyuhyun stands up, he adjusts his wrinkled shirt, brushes his pants off, and takes a step towards Donghae, who abruptly jerks further away out of reflex. Kyuhyun held back a chuckle at his friend’s reaction, thinking it was rather childish. To Donghae, it was perfectly fine to have that kind of reaction. What else were you supposed to do when one of your best friends kissed you so violently and practically went all freaky (and kind of sexual) Dracula on you?
Kyuhyun takes another step.
“Stop!”
“I’m not gonna do anything now. Relax, hyung.”
“Then…then…”
“Then what?”
Another step.
“Then…I don’t know.”
“You’re bleeding all over yourself. I just want to help-I’m the one who caused it, after all.”
Donghae calms himself down as Kyuhyun comes closer, although he’s still weirded out-not to mention plain freaked out-over the situation. His pulse has gone down, though.
“Yeah, well, I should clean this. There’s…stuff in the bathroom,” Donghae mumbles, slipping away from Kyuhyun for only a few seconds. Only a few seconds, because Kyuhyun follows behind him almost immediately.
Fumbling through the drawers of his bathroom, Donghae feels Kyuhyun’s stare on his back. He can also see his own blood dripping all over the place, and he can feel the sting slowly growing more and more painful. When he accidentally bites his lip in concentration, he winces and yelps.
Kyuhyun chuckles lightly, taking Donghae by the shoulders and moving him back from the counter and the drawers his hands are going through.
“This is beyond weird,” Donghae says, with his eyes on Kyuhyun’s back.
“Hm?”
“I have no idea what the fuck just happened. But now we’re just standing here like it didn’t happen.”
Kyuhyun picks out a box of bandages, and a bottle of antiseptic. He starts looking around for something else.
“Cotton balls?”
“Uh, what?”
“I asked if you have cotton balls,” Kyuhyun looks up and connects his eyes with Donghae’s through the mirror.
“Uh, yeah. Bottom drawer, I think.”
“Something wrong?” asks Kyuhyun as he crouches down on the floor.
Donghae blinks. “Did you seriously just ask that question? Did you forget what you did only two or three minutes ago, or something?”
“Nope, I didn’t.”
“Then why are you so calm about it?!”
“Because it’s happened before, hyung,” Kyuhyun stands back up and dabs some antiseptic on a newly retrieved cotton ball.
“It’s happened before?!”
“Yep,” Kyuhyun turned around and took Donghae’s chin with his fingers, making the older jolt from the sudden contact. He noticed that Kyuhyun’s hand wasn’t as scalding hot as his body temperature had been before.
“What exactly are you?”
Kyuhyun shrugged, dabbing Donghae’s lip, making him wince from the sting. “Beats me.”
“…”
“I just know I’ve been like this, at least for six years now.”
“Six years?” Donghae muttered. “And you have no idea what make you do that?”
“Nope.”
“Nothing at all?”
“Not a single clue. I just know it happens,” Kyuhyun shrugs, turning around to get the bandages. He sticks one over the wound on Donghae’s lip. “You should’ve seen what I did to Ryeowook’s hand about a month ago.”
“Hand?”
“Yeah, his hand.”
Donghae gulped as Kyuhyun stepped away, taking a towel of the rack before wetting it and wiping the blood of the counter.
“Why’d you bite me here, then?” Donghae points to the fresh bandage.
Dropping the towel to the floor, Kyuhyun slowly pivots in his heel and looks Donghae in the eye. A zap of energy flows down Donghae’s spine, and he feels afraid again. The smirk on Kyuhyun’s face might also have something to do with it.
“Because I wanted to.”
Frozen, Donghae doesn’t make a single move as Kyuhyun steps out of the bathroom without another word. Donghae just stands there until he hears the front door close. And then he’s alone, wondering what the hell had just happened, and what the hell it all meant.
For the rest of the night, sleep is impossible.
