Facebook is a love/hate/love experience for me. Had I realized in advance that you can't nuke your account, though, I would have never signed up. It adds one more reason for me to keep my account. At least if I'm being active on it I know it hasn't been hijacked while I neglect it in the pseudo-deleted state.
Facebook, home of social coercion of every variety!
Hmmm.. that's a very good point - thank you. Sometime this weekend after work, I'll log back on to that "dead" account to make sure it's still mine, and delete a bunch of "friends", and block them while I'm at it.
I'll do it it about midnight or so. My chat status is by default offline, so the chances I'll be noticed will be virtually nil.

Submit, jump through the hoops, and stay away from the account for 14 days. And it will (supposedly) be totally gone.
The old account is now on the 14-day cycle for total deletion.
