no, you're not actually cool or iconoclastic -- you're just an asshole

A few days ago, I was on a social networking site (not Facecrack), doing my usual cursory glance over the "news feed," and I happened to notice a friend commenting on their friend's journal entry with regard to a caption someone else had put on one of their images. I wish I could find that image again so that I could quote from thread word-for-word ( Read more... )

Is this where we get the word "halfwit"?

Because there's an interesting cultural shift there, from the Nosferatu-ghastly-walking-undead to the glittery-sullen-teenager vampire, worthy of some good material if someone, IDK, genuinely witty were writing about it.

...And yes, his captions were unfunny and lame.

A friend of mine recently wrote a nice bit for the local paper on the current Twilight hysteria and how it ties back into classic vampire mythos. She did a good job of not letting her distaste show. :)

That kind of behavour baffles me. I think it's true in a sense that "people can't take a joke anymore" (I do often think people take themselves way too seriously) but uh, it usually helps if the joke is funny to begin with.

It would be funny if members of non-dominant groups just accepted their place as second-class citizens! Then they wouldn't go around ruining it by, you know, realizing they're the butt of a joke and being offended by it.

Argh, that sort of thing makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

Why gouge yours out when there are plenty more perfectly good eyes to gouge that won't result in you blinding yourself?

I wonder whether that would stop if people started consistently responding to that with, "Homophobia is usually caused by sexual insecurities. It's okay to be open about your sexuality. We can help."

No, you're not brave and admirable -- you're wilfully ignorant, and backwards, and smug, and self-assured, and arrogant, and totally not even understanding the meaning of the word "brave."

This. My question is, would he say it to someone's face? My guess is, probably not, because the anonymity of the internet makes morons think they're ten feet tall and bulletproof.

When I read shit like this, I do get pissed off, but only until I remind myself that guys like this are, mentally, around the age of six.
