one day, i will figure it out, because otherwise, there's no point.
but until then, i'll just be content with hardly posting on here, or asking stupid questions or just avoiding this place completely until someone explains the workings (which are complicated, trust me) of livejournal, and the purpose of it.

Oh I remember I was like you when I got started. It's a bit complicated at first because you need to learn the basics of html and so on. There's loads of tutorial sites on here where they give you custom CSS to customise your ljstyle and so on^^ Btw if you meant icons by smiles then all you have to do is make a right click on the icon you like, save it to your computer, go to "profile" -> manage userpics and there you can upload more icons. in the "keywords" section you write keywords like "ten smiling" so you know what icon it is when you chose it here and in "comment" you credit the user you got the icon from. So I suggest if you like an icon you save it with the name of the creator so you can remember who made it later =)
