Chapter Eleven: The Kitten Knows
After two days, Jade felt awkward coming in and out of Davey’s postered room. Davey felt awkward as well, unable to leave the postered room. He would try ato life himself up, but he’d feel everything swirl and he’d fall back down. His handwriting, which he’d be the first to tell you, was not elegant to begin with, was deteriorating. His typing was sluggish and letters were repeated, but he had to hold on. He had to, just long enough, to leave something for Jade. Poems, a story, a narrative, anything.
Jade was trying to live somewhat normal, reading the newspaper and such. He found an article that caught his eye.
It was explaining about how animals are always put down because no one wants them. It begged that people should adopt them because it is saving a life. Jade sighed. Part of him felt like he was drained of saving things, but another part said, “You know that it’ll make Davey happy. Get a fucking animal.”
So he left a note that said, “Went to get something. Be back.” and left.

“Mew,” the young cat said softly, sitting in his carrier.
“Heh, heh... cutie,” Jade gushed, poking his finger in the metal door of the carrier to stroke the cat. “Davey will love you...”
The cat’s luminous green eyes watched the man closely. She self-consciously licked her paw, which was stark white against her black nose. She rubbed her white ear and then her black ear, then laid it down.
“Well, Rita, if you’re so bored...” Jade started, laughing. He was proud of himself. When he went into the shelter and saw the cat it was love and first sight. And her name was pretty cute, too. She was found in a shoebox left at the shelter without any holes. The people said she was a good cat and Jade believed them.
“Okay, here’s the gameplan,” Jade told the cat, his voice suddenly upbeat, “Okay, my name is Jade Puget. I’m the food bearer. You don’t bite me, I don’t bite you. If you bite me you won’t get food, okay? You will use the kitty litter box You will not use me. Your mission is to make someone dear to me happy. His name is Davey. You have to cheer him up... please...”
Jade wiped away a tear. “...Damn animals...” he whispered, “...they don’t get attached to people... lucky sons of a...”
He stopped.
“RITA! NO! BAD KITTY! LET GO OF MY PINKY!”
They made it back home in barely one piece. Jade got out of the car, looping around, grabbing the cat carrier. He opened the door and went inside. “Davey!”
Davey slowly poked his head out of his room, wearing a hoodie and sweats. His eyes danced around, trying to focus. “What’s that?”
Open your hands like you can hold something,” Jade ordered.
Davey did so.
“Okay!” Jade exclaimed, plopping the cat in Davey’s hands. Davey jumped back, shocked. He began to slowly pet the cat. “O-oh... Jade... she’s gorgeous...”
“I adopted her! Her name is Rita... she’s cute, right?”
Davey nodded. “T-thank you...”
The cat looked up. Jade clicked his tongue. Rita knew something was wrong with her master. Animals knew death. That was how they ate the weaker members or abandoned them in groups.
Davey brought the cat into his room and put him on the bed. “So your name is Rita?” he asked the cat.
Rita buried her head in the covers and mewled.
“Aww...” Davey cooed, petting her. He laid back, yawning. Rita joined him, purring. Davey slept, smiling, the cat close to his chest.

Davey didn’t wake up until early that morning. He decided to get out his laptop and type up some things. After awhile he felt dizzy and weak. He fell back on his bed, sighing. “Oh... shit...” he mumbled, “I must only have a few days left or something...”
He knew he was going to die now. It was getting harder and harder to breathe. He couldn’t feel his toes. He couldn’t see straight. He called for Jade. Jade walked in. “What’s wrong?”
“...I think I’m gonna die soon...” Davey said bluntly.
Jade nodded, biting his lip. “I see.”
“Don’t leave me, please?” Davey asked.
“I won’t... I won’t leave you at all... in fact, I’ll call up the guys to hang out with you, is that good?” Jade said, gulping.
Davey nodded. “Sure.”

Adam, Hunter, Smith, Fritch, and Tim walked into the house. Tim was supposed to be working with Transplants that day, but he decided to clear it for Davey.
“...Guys...” Adam whispered, “...Don’t scare him.”
They all nodded mutely. “We won’t.”
They went into Davey’s room. Jade got up and welcomed them. Davey whispered a “Hello...”
Rita slinked to the visitors, then to get food.
Hunter laughed, “Who’s that?”
“Rita,” Davey replied, his voice cracking.
Adam laughed, pulling up a chair. “Didn’t you get owned trying to catch a cat one year around Halloween?”
Davey nodded, “Y-yeah... I kinda fell in a ditch and fucked up my... leg.”
Adam shook his head. “You’re crazy.”
Then there was silence.
So many things were wanted to be dicussed, but nothing would come out right. No one wanted to make it end like this...
Davey rubbed his eyes, tears in them. “Thanks for coming, guys...”
Hunter bit his lip. “Remember... nah...”
“What?” everyone asked.
“It’s not working...” Hunter sighed, “I... I gotta go... I can’t do this...” For the first time in a long, long time, Hunter began to bawl like a baby. He went to Davey and hugged him close, sobbing. “I’m going to miss you, Davey... I... oh God...” He walked away, his face in his hands. Davey tried to get up, only to get pushed back down by Tim.
Adam came over. “You’re one powerful motherfucker, Davey Havok...” he grinned as he spoke, kissing Davey’s nose. “C’mere Hunter... well, Dave, I’ll see you sometime again... you know that.”
Davey nodded. “I know.” He looked at Smith. “You haven’t said anything.”
Smith yelled, “What can I say, Davey?! I feel like an asshole... I ignored you, and my brother busted his gut for you. I’m sorry! I really am!”
Davey yawned.
“Davey!” Smith squealed.
“I’m sorry, Smith,” Davey said, “Everyone keeps saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry’ since day one. Can’t anyone give it a break? The only person at fault is myself for allowing myself in this mess. It’s not your fault. Sorry won’t change the pass, okay, Smith?”
Smith nodded, smiling weakly. He hugged Davey close, smiling bigger. He walked to Adam and Hunter, taking one last look.
Davey gave him a smile. It was all he needed.
Fritch and Tim looked at Davey and shook his head. “What the hell...” Fritch said. They hugged him close. “You’re a real creep,” Tim laughed. They walked away, not crying at all.
Jade hugged and kissed Davey. “You’re such an evil genius.”
“I always will be,” Davey said, giggling a little. He then laid down and fell asleep.
