{Ace is restless and unable to sleep, so instead he clicks on his communicator. He begins flipping through the frequencies to see if anyone else is up at this hour. Sure enough his comm blips erratically with all the new arrivals. His eyes widen slightly as he takes it all in, soon losing track of how many there are. Giving up on watching them ( Read more... )

[You just might see a familiar, huge specimen of a man walk by a few blocks down. Just minding his own business. Taking in the hood.

Bother Y/N?]

[Woops, sorry about that. Some men just don't know their own strength. He takes a short step back but his eyes never leave your face - this isn't supposed to happen but he's sure as hell not complaining.

That smile though... it makes his own falter.]

...don't linger too much on the past, Ace. We did what we had to do.

{It was damn hard to live without regrets when it was your fault your family had to die. They fought so hard to free him, then he let that bastard Akainu get to him. All their efforts were wasted because he was too much of a damn hot head.}

but pops... if I hadn't--

{But he honestly couldn't argue with the old man. He just bowed his head, clenching his jaw and fists by his side. He did what he could to fight off the guilt.}

I'm sorry...

[He's silent for a moment. In some ways... Ace is right. If he hadn't gone after Teach, if he hadn't confronted Akainu the way he did, if he had just escaped when he had the chance things might have been different.

But he's been a pirate for far too long to think about the what-ifs. You do things because they're the right thing to do at the time and no amount of remorse will ever change that. Ace died for what he believed in just like this old man did himself not long after.

Seeing his son like this, guilt-ridden - it hurts and so he moves closer once more to wrap a treetrunk of an arm across the young mans shoulders, pulling him in.]

I'm proud of you, Ace. You followed your heart to the end and that is what makes a true man.

{The Whitebeard crew were really like no other group of pirates in the world. Not only did they embody the very spirit of piracy, living freely, doing as they pleased and making the world their own. But they didn't let that power corrupt their spirit, their hearts. They were men through and through, fighting for what they believed in and dying for the cause ( ... )

[If there was one thing that Whitebeard proved with his very existance it was that piracy was not necessarily a force of evil or a source of pain. He had done so much under that mark of his, taken in kids that would've wandered the seas without goal or purpose, built a family and his name alone was enough to create havens for the oppressed. There was so much he had done, yet so much he still couldn't do ( ... )
