So this whole return-to-LJ thing is not really as much, uh, happening as I hoped it would be. :| Anyway, you know that Shakespeare meme thing I have in my sidebar? As a means of updating here, I'm going to post that, with the most recent changes. And talk about them some! Hurrah! This will be fun.

Age of Kings!Richard II is so pretty. <33333

In fact, Age of Kings generally is PURE LOVE except that occasionally they cut things that they really shouldn't. Also, their Prince Hal is brilliant although it's very easy to get distracted by his junk. Sadly, Sean Connery as Hotspur sucks.

(Also also, everyone is always ragging on 2 Henry IV. One day I really will write that "why 2H4 is Shakespeare's most underrated play" screed. BECAUSE IT IS.)

He is!!!

Oh dear. Yeah. I do enjoy his "w-w-wounds" stutter, even though "w-w-worms" can be seen coming a mile away. I'm always torn when Shakespeare characters have vocal tics - on the one hand, it makes them more interesting and human, on the other hand, it does tweak with the language. (Not that that's always a bad thing!)

You should!! Part of my problem may have been that we had front-row seats in an open-air theatre, and I was wearing a dress. I might be willing to give it another shot in warmer circumstances. ;P One of the things I liked about that production, which I'm remembering now, was the way Rumor was hovering in the background throughout the show, occasionally fighting or giving other characters a little push. It was a nice detail.

It used to be something of a tradition for Hotspurs to stammer, especially on the letter W because obvious reasons -- but it's largely out of fashion now. Olivier did it when he played Hotspur in the forties (I think it started around the turn of the 20th century). The thing that bugs me about Connery's take is that he does it like once or twice to establish it and then never does it again until he dies!

Also, background!Rumor is an awesome thing. A group of my students did that in one of their scene performances and it was AWESOME.

A cast recording? Unfortunately not :( (though not for lack of petitioning!!) There are a couple bad-quality Youtube videos from early rehearsal days, if you're really interested?

So I know it's been over two years since you posted here, but I found your journal while looking for stills from the James Mason Julius Caesar movie (which is amazing, and how did I live so long without ever seeing or reading Julius Caesar? I don't understand how this happened) and oops, two hours have passed, but I regret nothing.

Just wanted to say that I enjoy your writing and hope you're having the best time in college.
