I thought I should know Discedo's opinion before getting ahead of myself! I thought this was the best way!

Oh, you're right. It's good to get a second opinion on a topic like this. You did the right thing.

I guess there can be a middle ground... But do you think they lie more to being selfless or selfish?

I guess so... But I like to think that everyone's mostly good! Maybe something happened to them that set them on a bad road, but... They were truly good before that!

Love has to be taught, but it is not easy to learn.

There are others who are unable to.

But isn't it the first thing you learn? I never thought it would be difficult...

Unable to love?

Yes.

Its difficulty is circumstantial.

But that doesn't make sense... Everyone is able to love! It's a capability everyone has, so...

It's kind of hard to decide on, isn't it? I'll try not to ask anymore difficult questions like these!

... 'Do you think most people are good or bad?' That's a summary of it, I guess!

Good, bad, it doesn't matter! What matters is if you're strong!

dontkickit June 1 2010, 09:43:21 UTC
But what if they're really bad and really strong? That would be terrible!

People are born selfish, but they usually learn quite quickly how to love and care for others, generally by example.

As for the "core"... Technically, it would be selfish. Maybe not mean, as I doubt there's any malice behind it, but self preservation instincts are very powerful.

I wouldn't say "selfish"... Maybe it's more that they just don't know how to deal with people. They have to learn social skills, of course.

But it's only natural to also want to take care of people close to you, right? It's possible it's a mix of selfishness and selflessness, but I think it's leaning more towards selflessness!

What I mean is... When you're born, you cry to get food and attention and you don't really consider other people's feelings right away. It's not mean-spirited, but it's for your own sake so it's selfish. "Social skills" isn't the same as kindness, but you learn that and how to love by example from your parents and people like that, who show it to you first.

That's true. But I wouldn't call that the core of human nature, that's an extra thing that sometimes outweighs your core, depending on who you are.

That's true enough, I guess... But I like to think that deep down, even in babies, there's kindness and selflessness that just haven't been discovered yet, that are waiting to be brought out by learning what those feelings are.

Then, to me, the core is selflessness, that's only tainted by the occasional want of something selfish!
