Summary: If any one was going to find a way to stop the apocalypse, it was going to be Sam. Bobby may not agree with Sam's plan but he believed in Sam and that was enough.
~*~*~
One second Bobby was looking right at Dean, waiting for the boy to come to his senses, and the next he was looking for Dean. There weren’t any signs, no flash of light or deafening high-pitched buzzes, just a blink of the eye and suddenly the space before him was empty. Dean disappeared into thin air and his timing couldn’t have been worse.
Bobby wasted time checking around the house even though he knew he wouldn’t find anything. Whatever took Dean wasn’t going to just transport him to another room for a friendly conversation. Bobby knew Dean was gone, probably kidnapped by the damn angels, and now he had to find both Winchesters before the Apocalypse started.
Dean’s harsh revelation replayed in Bobby’s head as he reached for his cell phone on the desk. He knew damn well that when this was all over Dean would be feeling extremely guilty but he also knew some part of Dean-no matter how small-honestly felt that Sam was too far gone to be saved.
All the years he’d watched Dean fight to keep Sam safe and it’s all thrown out the window as they sped headfirst into the apocalypse. Just when they needed each other most, when they needed their combined strength, Sam gives in and Dean gives up.
Without a second thought his thumb pressed the send button, clutching the phone to his ear as he listened to it ring on the other line. He didn’t really expect an answer and was ready to hang up after the fourth ring but he stopped when he heard the quiet voice on the other end.
“Where are you, boy?” he asked with just the right about of authority.
“It doesn’t matter, Bobby.”
“Don’t give me that, Sam,” he scolded. “Now’s not the time to be playing hide-and-seek.”
“I’m not hiding,” Sam corrected, “and I don’t want to be found. I have to do this, Bobby.”
“Look, Sam, I know Dean-”
“Dean doesn’t understand,” Sam cut Bobby off but his words were soft, barely above a whisper. “I have to do this. It’s the only way.”
“What exactly is it you have to do, Sam?”
“You wouldn’t understand either.”
“Don’t tell me what I will and won’t understand,” Bobby growled. “I want to know what’s going on and you will tell me.” So demands weren’t the best way of getting through to Sam but damn that kid for assuming that Bobby, of all people, wouldn’t understand.
“I have to stop the apocalypse,” Sam started. “And the only way to do that is to kill Lilith.”
“That sounds like a great idea, Sam, but you and Dean can do that together. You should do it together.”
Sam ignored Bobby’s suggestion and continued, “It has to be me. The only way to end this is to use my powers to kill Lilith before she raises Lucifer. Dean doesn’t understand that.”
“He’s just scared, Sam,” Bobby jumped to Dean’s defense. He may not have been happy with the way Dean had been handling things but he knew these boys and was confident that Dean really was just frightened.
“No, he’s not scared, Bobby. He doesn’t trust that I know what I’m doing. He hates that Ruby is helping me and he thinks I’m letting her use me but I’m not.”
Bobby knew the kid had a point, they both did actually. Working with a demon was bad news and even if Ruby had helped them fix the colt he wasn’t ready to believe she was on their side. But he was ready to believe in Sam. Eventually Dean would come around and see that despite the training wheels he still believed Sam needed, the kid was more than capable of taking care of himself.
“Look, Sam,” he sighed, “I don’t like this idea any more than your brother but if you honestly believe that this is the only way then do it. I know you can handle this, I just wish you wouldn’t do it alone.”
“You mean that, Bobby?” The kid sounded shocked-skepticism mixed with hope.
“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it,” he said before taking a deep breath. “But don’t let her manipulate you and pay attention to your instincts. They won’t steer your wrong.”
“That was a bit too insightful for me,” Sam teased.
“Just go save the world.”
“Thanks, Bobby.”
“Don’t mention it.” He cleared his throat and added, “Dean’ll come around, Sam. You know he always does. Right now things are just a bit crazy but you’re still his brother and he knows that.”
At least Bobby hoped Dean would remember that eventually. He’d remind Dean just as soon as he figured out where Dean was.
“I know that,” Sam sighed. “I just wish he trusted me.”
“Give it time,” he advised. “And be careful, Sam. I expect updates and if you do run into your brother, tell him we have a conversation to finish.”
Something told him he would regret this but arguing with Sam hadn’t gotten them anywhere and he tried to tell that to John years ago. Sam was a very determined and stubborn kid, just like his daddy, but he was also smart. If anyone could find a way to stop the apocalypse it was going to be Sam. He trusted that Sam would do the right thing and even if it didn’t turn out the way they hoped, at least he knew Sam’s intentions were good. He just hoped that they’d still be around once everything was said and done so he could knock some sense into those damn Winchesters.
The End.
