Roger Ebert had a lengthy interview with Jeff Katzenberg, who is single handedly trying to make 3-D the new standard. How many decades have the creators of 3-D and their proponents been saying that?
Personally, I'm not huge into 3-D. It just depends on the movie. Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D? Awesome. Coraline? Great. Heck, I even liked Bolt. Ebert noted, and I agree with him, that 3-D helped Coraline cause its color scheme was already "dark and dreary" -- so the tinted glasses didn't detract from anything.
But I tend to prefer 3-D when it enhances the film and they're not just "throwing stuff" at the screen to get you to flinch. Katzenberg's lastest 3-D pet project, Aliens vs. Monsters, looks downright godawful to me. Then again, half the animated films I saw this year looked terrible and ended up surprising me. And the one I thought was gonna be such hot stuff (WALL-E), came off as overrated in my book. So who am I to prejudge?
