The Osc-SNORES...

(This was originally my reply to angharad 's post.  Then it got long so I figured I'd just post it here)

The Oscars have a long history of completely underwhelming me.  Every year, without fail, I try my best to avoid it.  Normally, I'll have it on in the background while I'm doing something more important -- like organizing my socks.  Anything I miss I can ( Read more... )

The rule to have all voters in the foreign film category view all the films at special screenings is not recent. They've been tweaking the nominating process recently but not the final vote rule. Here's the truth about the foreign film award (and the documentary and short subjects awards): The only people who have time to attend the special screenings of the five nominated films are the older, retired members of the academy. They will tend to vote for the most traditional of the films and not the more innovative ones.

Ledger getting the award was interesting. I'd say touching. Though the constant reaction shots from "THE STARS" were getting on my nerves. Oh look... they're having a tender moment! They care! Come on. This is the probably THE SPEECH of this poor bereaved family's life and you keep cutting away to show Anne Hathaway having a precious memory and Ron Howard compassionately stroking his goatee and Brad Pitt trying to... emote. Seriously, they should've had an AWARD FOR BEST PERFORMANCE DURING A POSTHUMOUS HEATH LEDGER AWARD SPEECH.

Nice. This should be posted to metaquotes. Do you mind?

But another typical Oscar curio? Apparently, one of the reasons DEPARTURE won best foreign film, even though it was never released in the continuous U.S., is because of a recent rule that requires all voters to have seen every film in the category they're voting on. I'm sorry... WHA??? Wouldn't common sense dictate that that should've been the case already ( ... )

And as a side note...may be fact...may be urban legend...a majority of the DVD quality bootlegs that came out before the general DVD release of a movie used to come from preview and screening copies of movies sent to movie critics and out before the Academy Awards. Some studios and/or distribution companies won't sent out screening copies for industry awards anymore. I think Pathe used to be one of them until "Bend it like Beckham" hit it big ( ... )
