little miss sunshine and comedy legends of retail

i saw - and really, really enjoyed - little miss sunshine last night. it is about a family who travel across the u.s in a camper van to take the daughter to the finals of a beauty pageant. i've been reading a fair amount of reviews this morning - some of which seem to take issue with the fact that it seems to routinely check all the boxes that ( Read more... )

i completely agree about the enforced profundity in garden state. it completely fell flat with me when i saw it for the first time the other day, to the extent that i felt like ringing up the person who recommended it to me and asking to be removed from their christmas list. :)

little miss sunshine really tickled me. i especially liked the teenager's bedroom set, based on the later revelation about him (spoilerific, but you get what i mean). i thought steve carrell was wonderful. i think i might love him a little bit.

i'm coming to see you soon! yay!

yes, i really wasn't impressed with garden state. i like natalie portman a lot as well so the advance signs were good, but it just felt way too self-consciously profound (american beauty is the archetpyal film to fall into this trap). a bit like holding a conversation with most philosophy students.

the spoiler moment you refer to was what i gasped at. that twist really blindsided me for some reason, and i realised that i really quite liked the guy and wanted him to succeed.

can't wait to see you x x

yeah, i'm with slartibartfast on the issue of philosophy: hang the sense of it and keep yourself busy.

his bedroom was really telling. i remember thinking, oh, i wonder why his bedroom looks like that (hint hint) and then i was OMG THAT'S WHY. so.

yay for seeing one another, and there will be surprises and biscuits!

Hey!

I absolutely LOVED LMS. I enjoyed it so much that it made me happy for about 2 days after I saw it. And I loved Paul Dano's performance, I can't believe he did so much with a practically wordless character. He was really good in L.I.E too, have you seen that? And Abigail Breslin was a little star. But a little star who freakishly doesn't seem to have aged at all since she did Signs. Maybe its something they feed child stars in Hollywood..

See ya soon!

i haven't seen L.I.E but will try and check it out because i thought that he was good as well. miss sunshine was basically full to brimming with excellent performances - carrell is astonishing.
