Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst has dumped boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal.
The split clarifies why Jake didn't escort Kirsten to London's Spider-Man 2 premiere last week. The actress, who plays Mary Jane in the film, alongside ex-boyfriend Tobey Maguire, was cautious in averting questions about her relationship with Jake, repeatedly insisting, "I don't want to discuss my private life."
Jake, told friends that Kirsten broke the news to him two weeks ago and that he is "devastated", reports the UK's Sun newspaper.
According to a source close to The Day After Tomorrow star, "Kirsten and Jake had been spending a lot of time apart because they both had filming commitments. But Jake was totally besotted with her and is devastated that she has broken up with him. Kirsten's career has sky rocketed. She's one of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood right now."
Dunst had seemed equally smitten, claiming in one interview: "He's a turning point for me - a time of greater awareness and happiness." The pair even wore matching 'friendship' rings and Dunst admitted that their relationship was not short of passion having fornicated 'on the beach, in the car and nearly in a hotel hallway.'
But the source adds: "Kirsten felt her relationship with Jake was emotionally draining and she couldn't cope with it on top of her work. It's very sad for Jake. He is really heartbroken."
The star has obviously sacrificed her relationship for stardom. Having already made 43 films, the 22-year-old is determined to rid herself of the child actor label. "Remember, she was in The Bonfire Of The Vanities in 1990. She was just eight when it was released", says the source.
Jake met Kirsten through his big sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, who was starring alongside Kirsten in last year's Mona Lisa Smile, when she first tried to match-make the pair.
