Arphaxad: Initiative [1d20+3 = 10]

As you pass a particularly dense copse of trees, you spy a person ducked behind some foliage, a bolt already set on his crossbow, which he slowly raises to point at you.

GM: Okay, Sonadora - roll for initiative *grin*

Sonadora: [1d20+3 = 22]

GM: [1d20+2 = 15]

GM: [1d20+2 = 21]

Sonadora: runs at the fellow and whacks the crossbow out of his hands with her quarterstaff.

Sonadora: Quarterstaff (Attack 1) [1d20+2 = 13]

A hunter in a dark-green cloak does his best to grip the crossbow after Sonadora slams her quarterstaff into it, and just barely manages to hang on.

Sonadora: Stand down, Vida.

Vida grows her assent.

Arphaxad: why don't i have a vida?

Arphaxad: sorry, absent

Vida growls her assent.

A hunter in a dark-green cloak growls angrily, his crossbow useless at such a short range, and so he chucks it aside drawing a hatchet in the process!

A hunter in a dark-green cloak: Handaxe [1d20+2 = 6]

A dark-haired hunter swings over Sonadora's head, the axe cutting through the brush but not the halfling.

But then... from the trees on the other side of the road...

A second hunter: Crossbow [1d20+3 = 4]

A crossbow bolt strikes the tree, inches from Sonadora's head!

Sonadora jumps. "Uh oh."

You can just make out another hunter on the other side of the road!

Sonadora: Can we not all just get along?

Sonadora: Vida, attack at will.

Arphaxad steps out from behind a tree and calls up missiles of magic to his hand to fire on the unsuspecting.

Streaks of blue energy coalesce around Arphaxad's hands and streak towards the second hunter!

Arphaxad: [1d4+1 = 5]

The bolt strikes the second hunter in the chest, causing him to fall against the tree with a look of shock as he realizes Arphaxad's presence!

GM: Sonadora - you see a tall, dark-haired man draped with a robe and wielding a staff step out from behind the trees, summoning magical forces against the two who are attacking you.

Sonadora grins at the stranger that suddenly appeared.

Sonadora: Thank you!

Sonadora tries to knock the foe before her unconscious with her staff.

Sonadora swings at the man with her staff.

Sonadora: Quarterstaff (Attack 1) [1d20+2 = 20]

Sonadora: Quarterstaff damage [1d4+1 = 4]

A hunter in a dark-green cloak takes a sharp jab to the stomach, doubling him over!

Sonadora: Vida, attack.

A hunter in a dark-green cloak growls and straightens, swinging his axe at you vertically!

A hunter in a dark-green cloak: Handaxe [1d20+2 = 10]

Sonadora dodges back quickly, making a deft move to deflect the axe upward with her staff.

Vida circles around, biting at the hunter while he remains off-balance from his swing!

Vida: Bite [1d20+3 = 14]

GM: But misses.

The second hunter reloads his crossbow quickly and points it at Arphaxad -

A second hunter: Crossbow [1d20+3 = 18]

Sonadora: Look out!

A second hunter: Crossbow damage [1d8 = 4]

A second hunter pegs you in the shoulder, Arphaxad, pinning your cloak and causing you to wince in pain. (4 damage)

Sonadora winces and feels glad she knows some healing...

Arphaxad calls to memory Ray of Frost as he steps back into some undergrowth.

Arphaxad: [1d20+3 = 8]

Your ray shoots past him, causing the bushes behind him to frost over.

Sonadora swings hard one last time at the villain so she can focus on the other.

Sonadora: Quarterstaff (Attack 1) [1d20+2 = 12]

Ready for you, the first hunter dodges back, a smirk playing on his face.

Arphaxad: I hope your pet fares better than we have.

Sonadora darts behind the tree.

A hunter in a dark-green cloak steps around the tree and takes a wild swing at you!

A hunter in a dark-green cloak: Handaxe [1d20+2 = 19]

A hunter in a dark-green cloak: Handaxe damage [1d6+1 = 6]

A hunter in a dark-green cloak cuts into your shoulder, slicing into the muscle! (6 points of damage)

Arphaxad winces as he hopes she knows some healing

Vida dashes around the hunter, hitting him from behind!

Vida: Bite [1d20+3 = 9]

Sonadora: Vida!

Vida stumbles in the brush, missing the hunter with her teeth...

Arphaxad: Where did you get this dog, Halfling. I’ve seen birds that do more damage

A second hunter: Crossbow [1d20+3 = 8]

Sonadora winces in pain and wishes Vida hadn't run behind the hunter...

A second hunter shoots his crossbow at Arphaxad, the bolt getting lost in the dense growth of the bushes! Lucky break! (Not technically true - the hunter missed, but not due to the undergrowth.)

Arphaxad calls ray of frost into his hands again, praying for a good hit.

Arphaxad: [1d20+3 = 19]

Sonadora prays for a good hit as well...

Arphaxad: [1d3 = 1]

The ray of frost arcs into the guard's face, frost covering his skin as he falls shivering to his knees.

Arphaxad: Kill him quickly, Halfling!

Sonadora murmurs some words and casts produce flame at the hunter.

Sonadora backs up first and casts.

Sonadora: [1d20+5 = 16]

Arphaxad: I hope you don't miss and hit your dog.

Sonadora: [1d6+1 = 6]

Sonadora calls upon nature, causing her eyes to glow bright red as her hand catches fire.

Sonadora throws the essence of flame at the hunter, the fire scorching his chest viciously, and causing him to fall over screaming.

Sonadora sighs sadly at the hunter.

Sonadora: You should not have attacked us...

Arphaxad: Speaking of which, what are you doing out here, alone?

Vida sniffs at Arphaxad curiously.

Sonadora: I am on the hunt for that which befouls the forest. I thank you for your help.

Arphaxad: Befouls the forest?

Sonadora rubs Vida affectionately behind the ears.

Arphaxad: Are you speaking of the footprints that were mentioned in Sundown?

Sonadora nods.

Sonadora: I am.

Sonadora: I must also hunt for a friend wolf before the day's end.

Arphaxad begins to search the unconscious bodies for anything of value while he continues talking.

Sonadora: And you, sir? What is your business in these parts?

Sonadora smiles at Arphaxad to show she means no offense.

Arphaxad: My business is my own, but I am glad to have been of service to you.

Arphaxad: What do you call yourself?

You find a pouch with 50 gold pieces and inside it a scrap of paper with a fairly accurate, but not at all artistic, sketch of Sonadora.

They each are also carrying a light crossbow, several bolts, a handaxe and a set of studded leathers.

Sonadora chuckles.

Sonadora: I am called Sonadora. And this is my companion, Vida. And yourself?

Vida barks upon hearing his name.

Arphaxad: I am Arphaxad...and what manner of creature is this friendly thing?

Arphaxad kneels down to allow Vida to approach.

Sonadora divides the gold with Arphaxad and offers him the weapons.

Vida wags his tail and walks over to Arphaxad, his tongue lolling out of his mouth.

Vida, a wolf, has a distinctive white coat with a mask-like pattern of black fur around his clear, bright-blue eyes.

Sonadora: He is a wolf and a glorious one at that.

Sonadora smiles fondly at her companion.

Arphaxad: Well, she certainly must come in handy.

Arphaxad: Now tell me, why would bandits like these have a picture of someone like you?

Vida whines softly.

Arphaxad keeps a firm grip on his quarterstaff.

Sonadora: I believe I made a bit of an enemy yesterday. I embarrassed a hunter that was a bit disrespectful of the forest and its inhabitants.

Sonadora pets Vida to comfort him.

Arphaxad: I see

Arphaxad: Well

Sonadora shrugs.

Arphaxad: Tell me more of your quest.

Arphaxad: What do you hunt?

Arphaxad: And why?

Arphaxad suddenly remembers his own quest

Sonadora: I must protect the town and thus I must see what has the forest in such an uproar.

Sonadora: Hopefully I can just convince it to hunt further north.

Arphaxad: Actually, if u wish to continue to protect the town, then you should know I seek a young lady who may be in danger, as I am headed towards a caravan to seek someone who may recognize this charm.

Arphaxad shows the charm from the priestess.

Arphaxad: And if you would like to accompany me, you are welcome, and if not, i must go my way.

The charm is small and wooden. On its front is an engraving of an open book, the symbol of Oghma the Binder.

Sonadora: The healer asked me to find news of the caravan as well. I will accompany you.

Arphaxad grabs a handaxe and a crossbow and bolts from the unconscious bandits.

Sonadora: Let me try to heal our wounds first?

Arphaxad: By the way, can you do anything with this shoulder

Arphaxad: Very good, we think alike

Sonadora nods.

Sonadora: Sit.

Sonadora points at the ground.

Arphaxad removes his robe and pulls the bolt from his shoulder while wincing in pain

Arphaxad sits heavily from the pain.

Sonadora pulls out a clean cloth from her bag and spells clean water on it.

Sonadora sets about wrapping Arphaxad's shoulder.

Arphaxad: I really appreciate your aid.

Arphaxad: Are you native to sundown?

Sonadora nods to Arphaxad.

Sonadora: For all intents and purposes I am.

Arphaxad: Hmmmm.

Arphaxad: Thank you for the wrap, it has stopped the bleeding.

Sonadora pulls out a clean cloth and wraps her own arm.

Arphaxad: Well, shall we continue our trip north to meet the shipment and hopefully the lost girl?

Sonadora nods and helps Arphaxad up with her good arm.

Arphaxad begins walking north.

Arphaxad: A fine pair of heroes we are, with as many arms as 1 good man.

Sonadora follows with Vida.

Sonadora chuckles.

Sonadora: But what good arms they are.

Arphaxad: I imagine those two will be found by their brothers and taken back to their camp.

Following the merchant road for a few hours, you notice a set of wagon tracks in the mud. To the side of the trail you can just make out an overturned wagon, but the details are difficult to see through the brush.

Sonadora: That cannot be a good sign...

Arphaxad: Keep your eyes open, those who did this may still be around.

Sonadora nods wearily.

You don't notice anything in particular from this far away... the bushes are still covering your view.

Arphaxad: Perhaps your wolf would like to check around the path

Arphaxad: And I will look behind the wagon

Sonadora: And myself?

Arphaxad looks around and calls an armor to surround him

A shimmering field of blue coalesces around Arphaxad, fading slowly into his clothes.

Sonadora attached her quarterstaff to her backpack and pulls out her slingshot and dagger (if that's allowed)

Arphaxad: Sonadora, I carry a potion on me, but its only enough for one draught, so only use it should the worst happen.

Well, as you near the wagon, and step through the brush around the clearing...

A simple wagon lies overturned with several bodies scattered around it. A woman with long, dark-blonde hair is kneeling in front of the wagon and trying to get a look underneath. As she peeks her head underneath the edge of the wagon, she suddenly jumps backwards and screams loudly!

Three bat-like creatures fly out from beneath the wagon and hover about the young woman's head. The creatures seem to be a cross between bats and mosquitoes. Each has membranous bat wings, a short furry body, eight-joined legs that end in sharp pincers, and a needle-like proboscis.

Sonadora stares at the bat-like creatures before jumping in to help the girl.

Arphaxad: Girl, come here to the brush and hide, we will take care of these demons!
