Trust in absolutely fucking nothing but Doomtree

Went to a Doomtree concert last night. It was the last one of their tour, and the first one of theirs I've been to.

And it.

Was.

AWESOME.

It was at the High Noon Saloon, which is this smallish bar not far from the capitol (but then, what isn't far from the capitol around here). There were no seats - it was all floor. I got a spot right by the green room, maybe two feet from the stage. I could have reached out and touched them at several points during the concert. And I did afterward - they all shook my hand. :D

The crowd was... interesting. It was mostly punks, which surprised me, but I should have expected it since that's P.O.S.'s background. I was expecting a more hip-hop crowd, so I was wearing more b-girl attire, but I don't think I looked terribly out of place - there were also middle-aged married couples from the 'burbs there. And hipsters. Lots of hipsters.

The most important thing, though, is that people DANCED! Like, really fucking grooved. It was awesome. Too many concerts I've been to, people just stand there and stare. What's the fun in that? But this concert was two straight hours of jamming, which is exactly what I needed. Even though my legs and neck are sore now.

Anyway, a recap of their music, if anyone cares:

- Paper Tiger played some solo stuff off his most recent album, and it was great. I need to get my hands on it.
- Lazerbeak also played some solo stuff that he's working on (not released yet), and it was... well, it was pretty shitty. Like, he called it pop, but I'd say it was more this weird alt-rock thing, and he sang in this hoarse, wispy voice that I'm sure he thought sounded hip and cool but was really just hard to understand and boring.
- Sims also did some songs from his soon-to-be-released album, but his stuff was great. While he's not my favorite member of Doomtree, he's still a pretty talented artist. I also had a feeling that people didn't understand exactly who the object of his ridicule was in one of his songs. Like, it was a critique of "consumer activism," and how people get a false sense of accomplishment from buying the "right" things when they don't do anything else to improve society. But it seemed most people were like, "Yeah! Priuses! Woo!"

The rest of it was "best of Doomtree" stuff. Which means it was all really good. :D

In other news, work is all right. Up until now I've just been doing training stuff, but in the next day or two I'm going to start doing testing of our model system (in addition to training stuff). Real work will be a nice change of pace to all the projects and tests I've been taking.

I actually have friends now! Yay. We've been watching Battlestar Galactica together, and it's a helluva lot better than I thought it would be. Like, it's genuinely well-crafted drama. And the sci-fi world-building is interesting too. We're also watching the Horatio Hornblower series, which isn't exactly high cinema but is very lulzy. The ships are really cool to see, though.

I'm debating whether to invite them to my new year's party. Should that be just a "pre-graduation friends" thing, or can I mingle the social spheres? Hmm.

review, music
