Going to eleven

I feel like I'm being pulled in a dozen different directions as of late.

The majority of my work is writing release notes for special updates, which are basically patches for bugs that customers have come across. This means they have to get released ASAP. Which means I have very little time to write up a release note describing the patch. It wouldn' ( Read more... )

I'd still say that overall it's a good place to work. Also, apparently the experience differs greatly depending on what role you're in - Developers and Implementers, in particular, tend to have a pretty quick turnover rate, but Writers apparently stay around much longer. We also work much fewer hours - 45 is the average, instead of like 60 or whatever.

I just need to get used to this whole "job with deadlines and responsibilities" thing.

Well, if you're DMing Rokugan, you can always tell your players "fuck off, I'm taking the night off." Perhaps not exactly in those terms, but you know what I mean. It's a game, not the Nuremberg Trials, you're allowed to take it off if you need some time to unwind.

Epic does have a bit of a rep for hiring the brightest, then burning them out.

That being said, I don't think it's the job. I think you've hit "the just post college real life" syndrome. Having a long distance relationship makes it worse.

Having spent most my post-college life (Since I moved here) working sometimes long hours, and usually off on the road every minute I can (Mostly for SCA or visiting family), I understand.

Really, I think you need a break. Perhaps not a vacation, but at least some good ole fashioned downtime where you're not visiting anyone, or they're visiting you, and you can just sit on your ass and play Kingdom Hearts or stare at the ceiling drooling for a few days. :) It's necessary, especially with all of the busy-busy-busy.

Also, uh, HI.

It's Mike. Mike... something. Kellum! That's it. Red hair, part of that nerd frat you always hung out with, also was in China for a while (not at the same time as you, obviously). He works at a coffee shop here in Madison.

Ohhh okay. Actually, preeetty sure he never joined PKP. Unless it was a very last minute decision on his part. Cause I didn't really see him there much at all.

But that's still... weird. And, I guess that's where I thought Galen was ending up, but I didn't actually know.
