Poor Zabs :(

Charles J. Zabrowski, 62, of 135 West High Street, Gettysburg, died on Wednesday 30 January 2008 at his home. Born on 19 August 1945 in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of the late Johanna Louise (Platz) Zabrowski and Anthony Zabrowski. He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Beedle.

Charles Zabrowski graduated summa cum laude from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, in 1967 with a B.A. in Classics. After earning an M.A. in Classics and Ancient History from the University of Toronto, and spending a year (1973-1974) as the Seymour Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece, in 1984 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Classics by Fordham University, the Bronx, NY.

Professor Zabrowski’s two primary passions were paleography, in particular the editing of the manuscripts of the ancient Greek dramatist Aeschylus and the notes attached to those manuscripts, and the teaching of the ancient Greek language to college students. The recipient of a variety of grants for his research in palaeography, he published a number of articles in prestigious academic journals. He taught briefly at Elmira College in Elmira, NY, and at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, and from 1979 until 1986 at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. In 1987 he came to teach in the Department of Classics at Gettysburg College, where he progressed through the ranks to full professor, served as Secretary of the Faculty (1995-1998) and as Department Chair (1998-2004), and taught his beloved classical Greek to an astonishing variety and number of students. Wearing his academic gown as a symbol of his profession, he was a well known figure on the campus and in the local community. Professor Zabrowski was on sabbatical leave from Gettysburg College at the time of his death.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are cousins Tom and his wife Rose Quigley of Staten Island, Maryalice Clancy in New Jersey, and a number of nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a half-brother.

A Latin High Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday 4 February at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg, with Fr. Frank Paul Parrinello, FSSP, as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. A viewing will take place on Monday 4 February from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Memorials to El Centro, South Washington Street, Gettysburg, or Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettyburg. The Monahan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I know a lot of you didn't have Zabs as a professor (except Val and Emma), but you had to have known him. He was quite a character, and he really loved the subjects he taught. Anyone want to go halves on flowers to send to his wife?
