Why do you like Snape?

Question for people who like Snape, why do you think you do?

If you don't like Snape I'm still interested in your Snapey thoughts, but I was discussing this with the lovely empathic_siren and the lame son_of_darkness the other day and thought I'd ask other people, if anyone's reading this ( Read more... )

*nods* That's part of what started me off loving Snape. And I think the complexity was a bit more obvious in GoF and OotP, though it definately proved to be more in the last two.

I think possibly the same here, but we may have been too similar for that, temper wise.

All very true and important. Especially that last bit, ;)

Hm. I guess I like him just because as a fictional character, he's really well done. You know? Like, from a purely writing standpoint. I don't, like, wish he was a real person and want to have sex with him or anything, not quite that kind of fangirl, but I think he's JKR's best-written character by far, especially in a series with so many other one-dimensional characters. We really never are quite sure where his loyalties lie, right up until the end of the final book of the series, and I find that remarkable. He was always fascinating to read. What I regretted most about books 6 and 7 was that he wasn't in them nearly enough!

(This is Dora_the_nymph, honest)

I agree so much with you on this. I don't want him to be real, but he's an amazing, fascinating character. I totally agree he's not in 6 and 7 enough, though I loved the Tale of the Prince. Part of what caused this post was talking to son_of_darkness and him saying he found that chapter dull. I knew he doesn't really like Snape, but that surprised me.

When I got into fandom, a friend of mine recced me some Snarrys and the first ones I read were Josan's. That was after I had seen the first movie. So I got to know Snape first from fics and then I read the books.
That might have made me see him a little differently, but the main things are the same. He's a very interesting character, and he feels very real to me. There are things about the others that I find a bit too strong, or too weak, but with Snape it all makes sense.

Oh, that's interesting - you end up with the same Snape, but presently mostly through a different filter, probably makes it easier to jump into liking Snape's character.

Yes. A very interesting thing is that in some of the first fics I've read, Draco was the bad guy, and I don't remember what made me like the idea of Harry and Draco together. It's definitely fandom that got me to like Draco, though in my mind he's a very complex character, just like Snape, but without it shown in the books.

*nods* Fandom definately got me liking Draco, too. It's interesting to me the way Draco is/was (I'm not up to date on them) the bad guy in Snarry fics quite often. I avoided the idea of Harry/Draco for ages, but fell completely for it when I gave in.
