I see you moving around the room with that lovely smile of yours clearly visible on your lips.
And it makes me sad to know I’m not the reason of your happiness.
Did you find already someone else to love?
I just sigh in defeat.
I can’t fight for you... I’m sorry...
I can’t even do it for my own sake....
You were the one who helped me when I found out there was a problem with my ears.
You were the one who told me life was still beautiful because we were together.
But you are also the one who silently walks away from me at night when you think I’m asleep.
I might be deaf but I’m not blind.
You stop cleaning up the room and turn around to look at me.
“Wanna eat?” you sign to me.
This is the only way we can communicate now.
I’m not hungry but I nod.
Because I like to see you cooking for me.
It makes me feel as if you still love me.
I keep my eyes on you all the time.
Even when we sit down in front of each other to eat my eyes are fixed on your features.
And I know.... I know you hate the silence....
And you just try to fill it with the music (that I can’t hear), leaving the TV turned on (that I don’t watch), singing (making my heart bleed because it’s unreachable for me now).
“Why are you doing this to me?” I question you.
But I moved my lips to do so... and you didn’t notice it....
Because you look at them only when you wanna talk with me.
I remember the first days after I started to be deaf to the world.
You spent most of your time with me.
Now... you’re like a ghost in this small apartment of mine.
I knock on the table and you look at me with a questioning look.
But I just stand up and walk out of the room.
Soon you’re in front of me again, your look changing from curious to worried.
“Get out” I say moving my lips.
No sound coming out but still you seem to understand what I said.
“What?” you sign.
“Get out” I sign back to you.
There’s confusion.
There’s worry.
But when you look at my eyes... you know exactly why I said that.
You sigh.
And then you do something I couldn’t expect.
You hug me and cup my cheek, kissing me slowly.
When you pull back, a bitter smile is adorning your lips.
“I’m sorry” you say.
Five minutes later you are already in your car, driving away from this place.
All your stuff messily stocked in the back seats.

And all that’s left is silence.
