Friends of mine watch and have spoken highly of "Black Sails", but true to my usual form, I'm only just now catching up. And I really like it

This has been on my 'to watch' pile for a very long time, mostly because of the good reports from other fans. I'm glad it's watchable and it sounds like there's a lot to enjoy. I must say, there is a lot to be said for coming late to a show, simply because there is already lots of canon and you don't have to wait to find out what happens next (I do not think I could have coped with watching Hannibal in 'real' broadcast time!) *g*
It seemed like everyone was saying 'Stick it out through season 1, season 2 really hits its stride'...and now I find that's exactly what I'm saying. :D At first I was easily bored, and definitely put off by the early emphasis on rape (plus the typical 'lots of nude women, hardly any nude men' imbalance). But season 2 really has me onboard. Uh, so to speak.
Agreed on the value of coming to something late! I definitely benefited from my friends having gone ahead, and also now I can watch at my own pace, not have to wait if I don't want to. Although I might be caught up by season 4 (which I have heard will be the last), and then I'll have to join the crowd.
I do have to say, maybe Hannibal spoiled me or something (not that every show can speak in Heightened Metaphor-ese!), but sometimes the Black Sails dialogue has me wishing they'd done one more editing pass

I've been curious about Black Sails since it started (I'm rather fond of Toby Stephens), so I'm glad to hear it has the Dorinda Stamp of Approval (TM).
Toby Stephens is SO GREAT in this role. I have to assume he felt lucky to get it, because it really let him dig in and do some wonderful acting, all along the spectrum. A complex character, larger than life but with subtle nuances and layers, not to mention also getting to play himself ten years earlier and showing the process that made him who he is now. A tour de force, really. Plus action and fighting and fake blood! What actor wouldn't love it. And he got to kiss Rupert Penry-Jones. :D
I do worry about him a little in all that sun, though. (They shoot in Cape Town, South Africa.) He clearly has the true redhead's complexion, and comes out all in ruddy freckles, like my dad used to when he gardened in the Tucson, AZ heat with no shirt on. I hope he has a sunscreen consultant!
I was very sad that Toby Stephens did a production of Coriolanus back in '94 when I was utterly skint because the reviews were fantastic and I bet he would have acted the heck out of that role. You have now vaulted Black Sails near the top of my to watch list. And having him kiss Rupert Penry-Jones isn't a bad thing. *g*
I am loving it so much. I'm really glad I stuck with it! Because now I am very emotionally involved. Sometimes to a painful degree, actually--some of the setbacks and losses the characters face or have faced in the past, especially Flint's, are just SO UPSETTING. How could I want to wrap such a rageball in a soft blanket and provide him with cocoa and books?? :D
I haven't read any fic yet--I figured I should probably wait until I caught up, so as not to get spoiled, and also to get my sense of the characters and rhythms more firmly seated. But I am always open to hearing recs if you have any!
And I'll definitely let you know when I've caught up, because I'd love to hear more of your thoughts!!

FLINT!!!!
Silverflint.
Maxanne.
Billy Bones.
Origin stories!
Dialogue that has such a particular cadence, particularly in season 3, that no fanfic writer gets it right for me at all.
These things, I love.
I'm depressed that next season is the last, so I look forward to discussing it all with you when you reach the end of season 3. *g*
