I know exactly what you mean!

I had to stop watching HGTV because many
of those so called "Home Improvement" shows
were nothing of the sort!

I almost always ended up liking the before pics better than the finished results!

I think you'll find it's all about budget. "Finished to a high standard" implies the codicil "given that the place was crap to start with and that they have limited money to spend, and anyway some idiot with too much money and no imagination will buy/rent it".

You are looking at this from an American eye, not a European eye. They like small rooms. Small rooms are easier to heat and cool. Europians are not as materialistic as Americans so they do not need as much storage. It is part practicle, part a carry over from the war, and part european sensabilities.

i had to giggle when you said older, as older in Europe can mean 100's of years old.

Oh yes I am the first one to admit we or I must be materialist since I have one of everything ever made.

But as for storage, I did not say a lot of storage. I mean they provide NO storage. I am sure some folks in England use toothpaste and soap along with wash cloths. Not one of these baths provides anything in which to store these things.

Oh believe me I know old. And some of these homes qualify even in England as old if not ancient.
