“Moooommy!”
Nico Minoru closed her eyes and inhaled slowly, counting backwards from ten. “Don’t call me that, Tom.”
Tommy pouted at her mockingly, switching Ray-Ray from one hip to the other. “I’m just saying what Ray-Ray’s thinking,” he said sweetly. “And Ray-Ray wants her Mommy, donchya, sweetpea?”
“Ever time I pick her up, she starts crying,” Nico said, “and I’ve got work to do.” She tapped the case files spread out in front of her with a long finger.
“We never get to see you anymore,” Tommy said, that mocking pout still in place. “Ray-Ray never sees you. That’s why she cries.”
Nico buried he face in her hands and made a frustrated noise. “I am an unfit mother!” she moaned.
“Bullshit.”
“Don’t swear in front of Rachel.”
“Why not? She’s gonna learn the word anyway. But like I was saying: you just try to do too much at once.” Tommy strapped Ray-Ray into her swing seat, then padded over to Nico and started kneading her shoulders. “You gotta relax, Nicky.” He pressed a kiss to the nape of her neck. “Here’s a thought. Why don’t I run the sprog over to Vic, pick up some dinner, and we have a nice, relaxing evening in.”
“I’ve got work to do,” Nico protested, reaching for the files that suddenly weren’t on the table anymore.
“They’re in your office,” Tommy said. “You can get them in the morning. Tonight, you are going to relax.” He nuzzled her ear, mouthing the earrings. “Even if it means tying you to the bed.”
“Promises, promises.”
