Free. Teddy found himself intensely grateful to Nick Fury as he drained the bank account using the bank card the ever resourceful S.H.I.E.L.D. general had provided. He stuffed the cash into his vest and hurried into the dark alley where Billy was waiting for him. “We’re good. Let’s go.”
Billy nodded, teleporting them out of the city and into another one. It was all part of the plan Captain America had pounded into their skulls in case something like this went down. Keep low, keep moving. Don’t draw attention.
They had talked about meeting back up with Cap’s Secret Avengers, and had decided against it. At least, for now. Maybe after a few days, when things had cooled down.
When Teddy didn’t feel so angry with the others for abandoning Billy.
They landed outside a motel, and Teddy shifted to look like the ID in his pocket while Billy hid behind the dumpster with most of the money. Teddy reluctantly left him there while he went to rent a room for the night.
It went perfectly. The clerk barely acknowledged him, passing him a key card and receipt. Teddy hurried out, then hustled Billy into the dinky room. At least it was clean.
Billy’s arm was around his waist, like Teddy was the only thing holding him up. His skin was a decidedly unhealthy grey. “Christ, Billy…”
“I think I feel worse than I look.” Billy decided, closing his eyes.
Teddy scooped himself up and deposited him on the bed. “I’ll make the supply run,” he said. It was a testament to how tired Billy was that he didn’t argue. He just kissed Teddy, slowly and tenderly, and watched him shift his shape so he looked like his ID again. He slipped out silently and headed for the Walgreens across the street.
He worked quickly, grabbing bottles of soda and sandwiches and bags of chips, then a few tee-shirts and a pair of sweatpants that he hoped would fit Billy.
He also snagged a box of condoms and a bottle of KY on a wild impulse. They had yet to progress beyond making out and hand jobs (excluding the near disastrous blow job where Billy almost sneezed). But there was always hope. In those dark hours when Billy had been in the hands of the pro-reg side, hope had been all Teddy had.
He hurried back to the room, juggling the cheap plastic bags that threatened to tear at any second. He found Billy where he had left him, sitting on the bed and watching CNN. Teddy dumped the bags on the floor and sat next to Billy, wrapping his arms around the boy. “It’s okay,” he whispered into Billy’s hair. “It’s going to be okay.”
“How could things get so bad?” Billy asked.
Teddy didn’t have an answer, so he grabbed the remote and turned off the TV. He ran his hands through Billy’s sweat dampened hair, and the darker boy leaned into the touch. “Billy.”
Billy kissed Teddy’s chin. “Help me out of my uniform?”
“Sure.” Teddy’s hands slid down Billy’s sides, working under while the other boy pulled off his headgear. “Christ, Billy,” he whispered as he got the shirt off and got his first good look at the bruises mottling his chest.
“I got ‘em in the escape.”
“I’ll kill them. I’ll kill every one of the bastards,” Teddy whispered.
“No you won’t,” Billy said before silencing him with a kiss. His hands slid down Teddy’s back and under the waistband of his pants. They came around, and he flicked his fly own. “Help me,” Billy sighed, pulling Teddy so they were lying on the bed together. “Help me forget.”
Teddy sat up, looking down at Billy and worshiping him with his eyes. The boy was sweaty, bruised, and tired, and he was still the most beautiful thing Teddy had ever seen. “We should sleep.”
Billy put his arms around Teddy’s neck. “If we sleep now, I’m gonna chicken out,” he said, his eyes wide.
“We don’t have to,” Teddy said, stroking the side of Billy’s face. “Not now.”
“Ted, we could be recaptured tomorrow. We could be dead tomorrow.” His hands were back inside Teddy’s pants, under his underwear and kneading his ass. “I need tonight. Please.”
Teddy had always been someone eager to please those around him. He wasn’t very good at saying no. And he wasn’t about to say no to Billy.
