They’d had to put Jubilee totally under for the birth. She was more than a little disappointed. She’d wanted to actually be there for the birth of her firstborn. Instead, she was staring groggily at the ceiling and listening to Jono sing.

Jono didn’t sing like normal people. That was impossible, since he was missing most of his face and chest. But he could still sing, the same way he could still talk.

He didn’t sing often. In fact, Jubilee couldn’t remember the last time she’d caught him at it. It’d been a while.

He’d sung for her their first night. She would always remember it.

And he was singing now, something soft and sweet and soothing. She turned her head to look at Jono, sitting in the chair by her bedside holding a tightly wrapped bundle in his arms. He shifted the baby in his arms a bit, looking at Jubilee. It’s a girl. Ten fingers, ten toes, two eyes, one nose, no obvious physical mutations…

“Told you.”

So you did. She’s beautiful.

“Do I get to hold her?”

Jono looked from Jubilee to their daughter. I’ll think about it.

Jubilee rolled her eyes and tried to move her arms. They failed to do more than lift a little. Okay, she could hold her later. “So… we still agreed on the name?”

Angel. he agreed. She’s never going to forgive us for it, you know.
