It brought a sad smile to his face. “You chose it?” he asked, turning to look at his daughter.
Rachel put the hand not clutching her Kleenex on his shoulder and nodded. “There’s one going up at the X-Mansion too.”
“He deserves it.” Thomas ran his hand around the base, feeling the rough granite beneath his finger tips. “What’d the lawyer have to say?”
“He left me… everything.” Rachel ran a hand through her silver streaked hair, and Thomas frowned to himself. To be honest, there was more silver in his daughter’s hair than black these days, and there were lines beginning to etch themselves deep in her face.
She’ll be forty next year, he thought as she pulled him into a rough hug. He could feel her tears soaking into his shoulder.
“Promise me,” she sniffled. “No more missions. Promise me.”
Thomas patted Rachel’s back awkwardly, but he didn’t make the promise. It was one he knew he couldn’t keep. Vic would be alive right now, he thought. If he’d made that promise, he’d still be here. But Rachel would be dead.. “He loved you so much, Ray-Ray.”
“Stupid. It’s so damn stupid.”
“I know, honey. I know.”
