Tony Dracon opened the curtain, let out a long suffering sigh, and unlocked the window. “Allow me to assure you,” he said, “whatever it is, I haven’t done it. I doubt I had anything to do with it.”

Matt blinked as Tony opened the window, exchanging a perplexed look with Broadway. They both caught a strong whiff of alcohol on Dracon’s breath.

“Well? Are you coming in or not?” Tony demanded, swaying on his feet. The detective and the gargoyle climbed carefully through the window, wary of traps, and Tony reached for the decanter on his desk. “A drink. A toast!” he declared, sloshing amber fluid into his tumbler. “To the end of an era. To the emash-emass-to the castration of Anthony Dracon.” He looked around. “Where’s Maza? I’m sure she’d love to drink to that.” He slammed the glass back as the door to the office opened, and Gabriel Dracon peered into the room.

“What on Earth…?”

Tony turned, still holding the glass and decanter. “I,” he announced, “have guests.”

“So I see.” Gabriel said, blinking. “A gargoyle and a… hey, don’t I know you?”

“That’s Detective Bluestone,” Tony informed his brother pompously. “He believes in everything. He probably even believes in you.”

“You’re drunk, Anthony.” Gabe said darkly.

“Yes, I think I am.” He waved the mostly empty decanter around. “It’s the one thing you can’t take away from me. I can get completely and totally smashed, fur-for-brains.”

The small man crossed the room, snatching Tony’s alcohol away. “Shut up, you Godfather reject.”

“Go chase a rabbit!”

“Excuse us,” Gabriel said to Broadway and Matt, grabbing Tony by the shirt and dragging him out of the office, slamming the door behind them.

“This,” Broadway said, “was not what I was expecting.”

“Who’d have thought Tony Dracon would be a friendly drunk?”

The door opened again, allowing Gabriel back in. “Whatever it is you think he did,” the dark man said, “he couldn’t have done it. He hasn’t stepped outside this building since his release, as the police know full well.”

“We came to ask Mr. Dracon a few questions about some friends of his,” Matt said. “We think he may be the target of someone very dangerous.”

“This is news?” Gabriel asked with a little laugh. “My brother has a talent for pissing people off. Lots of folks would love to have his head on a platter.”

“This is different,” Matt said, pulling some of the crime scene photos out of his pocket and handing them to the man. He looked them over and handed them back without so much as a flinch. “Whoever did this is trying to send a message.”

“Then lets hope he gets it,” Gabriel said. “My brother has nothing to do with this.”

“I find that hard to believe, Mr. Dracon,” Matt said as Broadway did his best to look menacing. Personally, Matt thought he was doing a very good job, but the younger Dracon seemed unfazed.

“Mr. Dracon is my grandfather. I answer to Gabriel. And I think this conversation is done, unless you want me calling my lawyer.”

“This isn’t over,” Matt said.

Gabriel sighed. “There are worse things in this world than my brother. I suggest you worry about them.”
