Jono watched Victor reluctantly devour the bacon butty, drumming his fingers on the table.

“I’m sorry about the boots,” Victor said quietly.

“S’alright,” Jono assured him. “Ain’t the first time.”

Victor groaned, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his hands. “God…”

“So, who’s brilliant idea was it? Julian’s?”

Victor swallowed, not looking at Jono.

“Not ratting out your mates is commendable. But Frost is gonna come down like a sack of hammers when she finds out.”

“She can’t do any worse than I feel right now,” Victor assured the telepath. “Gawd, my head.”

“No vows to never drink again?” Jono teased.

“Probably wouldn’t keep it,” the younger mutant admitted, forcing himself to his feet.

“Finish your juice,” Jono advised. “‘s nutritious an’ all that rot.”

“Yes, Mother,” Victor said mockingly, gulping down the juice. “Can I go now?”

“Stay out of trouble,” Jono cautioned, watching as the boy waved and headed out, likely in search of his own bed. He waited until Victor was gone, then made a disgusted noise, running a hand over his face. “Bloody idiot,” he muttered to himself.
