“I have to tell my family,” Bobby said, looking from the photo in his hand to the former girlfriend across the table. “They’ve got the right to know.”

“So long as they don’t come near us, I don’t care,” she said firmly. “I won’t have them going through a childhood like yours.”

“There’s nothing wrong with how I grew up,” he said defensively.

“Not from where I’m standing.”

“Okay,” Ted Altman said, lacing his fingers together and using them to prop up his chin. “We’re both here, and we’re both listening. What did you do, Bobby?”

“What makes you think I’ve done something?”

“You’ve been looking guilty since you got back, and you asked to talk to us,” William Kaplan said. “Whatever it is, you can tell us, and we can fix it.”

Bobby shifted in his seat, then pulled out the photograph he’d gotten that afternoon, passing it to his fathers. “They’re mine,” he said.

The silence that fell was heavy enough to crush all questions from his parents.

“It was an accident,” Bobby went on. “She didn’t know till after she moved away, and I didn’t know till I got this vision, and…” His shoulders slumped, and he ran a hand through his silvery blonde hair. “She doesn’t want me to have anything to do with them. She knows some of my history, and it’s got her freaked.” He started braiding his hair nervously.

“What are you going to do?” Ted asked.

“You’ve got rights, as the father,” Will added. “Prove paternity, and she can’t deny you visitations.”

“I’m not sure she’s entirely wrong in keeping me away,” Bobby admitted. “Not that I think my childhood sucked or anything, but…” He hesitated. “With things like they are, they’re never going to have to wonder if the kid sitting next to them is planning to kidnap them or kill them because of who they’re related to. They’ll be safe.”

“These things have a way of coming out, Robert,” Ted said gently. “My family tried the same thing, as you may recall.”

“I know, Dad. But they’d get a few years of peace before the chaos.” He chewed on the end of his braid. “What do you think I should do?”

“It’s up to you, kiddo,” Will informed his son.

“What’re their names?” Ted asked.

Bobby let out a weak chuckle. “They’re named after me, kinda sorta,” he said. “Robert Lee and Roberta Rae.”
