“Take a deep breath, kiddo, we’re getting out of here,” Tommy said, wrapping his arms around the dark haired boy. He was small and light, and would be easy to carry. The boy whimpered and squirmed, dark eyes wide. “S’okay, guy, I’m a superhero. Your sister sent me.”

Tommy took off, holding the boy close to his chest and whispering words of comfort as he ran. The first thing to do was get the kid to the Lair, get Kate and her money to help out. Then he was going to find the sister.

He wasn’t sure what would happen then, but he hoped it would involve blowing things up. Especially things involving doctors and guards. From the infrequent contact he’d had with her, he got the impression that she’d be all for that. He could feel her lurking in the back of his mind. She felt… triumphant.

“Not much longer,” he whispered as the boy sobbed into his shoulder. “We’re almost there. Just a little bit longer. You’re safe now.”

The kid clung to Tommy like a barnacle to the side of a ship, his fingers digging sharply into Tommy’s shoulder. The speedster winced, but didn’t stop running, and didn’t tell the kid to ease up.

Sometimes, you just needed to cling.
