Special thanks to
clayin, who helped me work out the shape of this one, and who also provided a goodly portion of Zeke’s dialogue.
Becca Altman-Kaplan sat across the table from Zeke Starsmore, rubbing the bridge of her nose and reminding herself that throttling the man would be counter-productive, even if she thought he deserved it. “You are persona non grata at the tower, Starsmore. You don't come near the Avengers. I've already had all your things shipped back to Xavier’s. Any future team ups, make yourself scarce. Also, His Majesty the Emperor has issued orders that if you are found in Skrull Empire space, you are to be detained and returned to Earth immediately. I'm sure you've already noticed that you're not wanted in Mutant Town... I suspect you have the Old Woman to thank for that.”
Zeke nodded, swaying drunkenly. “’e’s not dead, is’ee? Cause I gotta… thingie.”
Becca hesitated, standing up slowly. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. “He disappeared after you left. If you see him, call me… but stay the hell away from him. We’ve got no idea what kind of mental state he’s in.”
Zeke tried to get to his feet, nearly tipping himself and his chair over in the process. “’ve gotta find him. Gotta explain. Not his fault…”
Becca grabbed Zeke before he could tip over completely, setting him back in his chair. “Don’t you think you’ve done enough?”
“I’ve gotta--”
“Ezekiel,” Becca said sharply, drawing the empath’s attention to her. “I think we’re both in agreement that this is your fault. And I am not going to let you make things worse. Stay here, or go back to Xavier’s, or whatever else. But stay away from my brother.”
“Prob’ly not wanted there, either.” Zeke mumbled, laying his head down on the table.
Becca shook her head, leaving the mutant where he was and pulling out her cell phone to make a call to the Xavier Institute. “Come get the damn empath before he does something else to fuck up all reality, please.”
