Okay, Jono said, what’s the catch?

The woman who had introduced herself to him as Kelly Greene put all four of her hands on her hips. “Catch?” she asked innocently. “I’m not seeing a catch here. You’re moving into Mutant Town , a sixth floor walk up, an old building, no parking space…”

Even for all that, the rent’s remarkably low, Jono pointed out suspiciously. What’s the catch?

“The place is haunted. Every night, the walls ooze blood.”

Jono arched an eyebrow. Seriously?

Kelly snorted. “No. But the plumbing’s iffy. We’re working on it. You want the place or not?”

… it’ll do, the telepath finally said.

“Excellent!” Kelly rubbed the hands of her upper two arms together. “Then let us step into my office.”

Said the spider to the fly, Jono thought.

***

I think the landlady might be a super villain, Jono said.

Jubilee and Angelo were silent for a long moment. “It says a lot about our lives,” Angelo said slowly, “that you can say that seriously, and that we know you mean it, and that you could be right.”

“Okay, spill,” Jubilee sighed. “What’s setting off your spider-sense?”

It’s just… a little too perfect, you know? Jono thrust his hands into his pockets. The day we blow into town, we find this place. She didn’t even run a background check.

“Maybe nobody wants the place,” Jubilee pointed out. “It smells like cat. Dead cat. In a Port-a-Potty.”

“You wanna go back to the Mansion, man?” Angelo asked.

Jono shook his head. Just… keep your eyes peeled.
