“Whatever it is that’s bothering you,” Jean-Paul sighed, “please spit it out. Or at least, stop fidgeting.”
Victor went still for a moment, the fiddled with the zipper of his jacket. “D’ya ever thing of, um, maybe having kids?” he asked.
Very slowly, Jean-Paul put down his book, one eyebrow rising in an excellent imitation of Spock. “What?”
Victor squirmed, feeling once again like the fifteen year old boy who had once shyly asked for Northstar’s autograph. “I don’t mean having them having them, I mean adopting, and…” he trailed off, forgetting what he had meant to say.
Jean-Paul rested his elbows on the table, steepling his fingers. “Children,” he said.
“Maybe just one to start with?” Victor suggested meekly, then immediately regretted it. Jean-Paul stood up, silently grabbing his coat. He didn’t even look at Victor as he left, and the younger man knew better than to follow. Instead, he collapsed into a chair and buried his face in his hands. “Dammit.”
