Things We Don’t Talk About “A child is… a very great responsibility,” Jean-Paul said, steepling his fingers. “This wouldn’t be like babysitting. You can’t give this one back to it’s parents at the end of the day.”
“I know,” Victor said.
“You’re very young to be taking on this kind of responsibility,” the speedster pointed out.
“Jean-Paul, a lot of people my age are starting families. And yes, some of them are even adopting. Hell, look at David and Nori.” He waved his hand in the general direction of Salem Center and his two former classmates’ residence. “They’ve got enough foster kids to build their own super-team.”
“And it is an admirable thing. But we are not David and Noriko, thank God. Neither of them are currently on any team.”
Victor scratched the back of his neck. “Do you not want kids?”
Jean-Paul closed his eyes, pursing his lips. He drummed his fingers on the arm of his chair, and Victor waited. He knew there was no point in rushing the elfin mutant. He’d answer when he was good and ready.
“Perhaps. But I do not find the idea of changing diapers appealing.”
“There are lots of older kids that need good homes, too,” Victor pointed out. “We wouldn’t have to adopt a baby.”
“This,” Jean-Paul admitted, “is true.”
