“Swear to God, Jean-Paul, if Frost says one more word about Genosha…” Victor said through gritted teeth as he dug through the rubble.

“She is, I think, rightfully bitter about the lack of help they got,” Jean-Paul said.

“Yeah,” Victor grunted, tossing a heavy support beam away. “But does she have to bring it up every time something like this happens, and we come to help? Blindfold, are you sure someone’s down here?”

“Yes.” For once the sightless woman was being very succinct. It seemed like the all-pervasive gloom of the ruined city had gotten even to her.

Jean-Paul bit back on a growl and reminded himself not to go too fast, lest he inadvertently cause the shifting rubble to crush the survivors.

Victor paused, peered down a shaft he uncovered. “I hear something. Hello? Is anyone down there?”

Someone’s soft sobs echoed up the shaft.

“Hang on! Help’s on the way!”

The little girl refused to let go of Jean-Paul, and to be honest, he didn’t try too hard to pry her off. She smelled like dirt and the blood of the people who had died so close to her. She’d stopped crying long before she’d been dug out, and now only made soft mewling sounds whenever someone tried to take her from the speedster.

At the moment, she had a tiny green hand wrapped around Jean-Paul’s wrist in a death grip while her head lay in Victor’s lap.
