From the journal of Victor Borkowski:

I remember when Jay Guthrie came back from the dead. I remember looking at him and thinking “Why you? Why not Sarah or Andrea or Brian? Why are you back?”

I never much cared for Jay. He was of a decidedly old school religious bent, and I was decidedly out of the closet.

We solved our mutual dislike by avoiding each other.

He’s dead (again) now. So is almost everyone I knew. Their children are all old or dead. Their grandchildren are middle aged.

And now I know how Jay felt when people wondered why he was the one given a second chance.

Today, Ted took me with him to see Bobby’s old teacher. She’s younger, physically, than she was when I first met her. Doesn’t look much older than 14.

I was surprised to find out that Ted had become friends with the old witch, and said as much. Ted told me that at his age, he appreciated having someone around who remembered some of the things that he did.

The first time I met Rowena Mox-Xanathos, Megan had asked me to come with her while she ran errands for the guy teaching her magic. One of those errands brought us to Rowena’s shop.

She’s every bit as scary now as she was then, and she knows it.

I wonder, sometimes, what it’s like to watch everyone around you grow old and die. I, at least, got to skip that part.
