“Cessily Kincade?”
The woman was of average height, too thin and pale, with dark hair and very intense eyes. She spoke with an accent that was decidedly British, and she looked at Cessily in a way that the girl found profoundly unnerving.
“Who’s asking?” Cessily asked warily, clutching the cup of coffee she had allowed to grow cold while she’d let her mind wander. The woman sat in the booth across from her, clasping her hands on the table.
“My name’s Esme, and I’m your cousin.”
“I don’t have any cousins,” Cessily said flatly, standing up. “I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
“Your father never much cared for his mum’s family, as I understand it. I shouldn’t be surprised he never talked about us, what with all the mutants.”
Cessily stopped in mid turn, looking back at the young woman slowly. Esme’s mouth turned up in something that was too sharp to be a smile. “Have I got your attention now, Cessily?”
“What do you want?” Cessily asked, still wary of the too thin woman with her predator’s smile.
“This isn’t about me, pet. This is about family.”
