There was a Jeff-shaped hole between them. It was immidiate and obvious and raw, and none of them wanted to talk about it.
Jeff’s room wasn’t turned itno a shrine; Will wouldn’t allow it. After a month, his things were packed up and put into storage, and his room became a guest room that no one ever used. The family pictures with him were slowly edged out by newer pictures that he wasn’t there to be a part of.
The fights between the three remaining Altman-Kaplan siblings grew more intense and lasted longer. Jeff had always been the peace maker, knowing just what to say to defuse the situation, and just when to say it.
Nate withdrew more from everyone around him save for Hal, who was the only person who was privy to the boy’s feelings of betrayal.
At Passover, there were two empty seats at the table.
