“Is it safe?” Victor called, tapping on the door.
“Is it ever?” Alani called back. “I’m dressed, so get in here.”
Victor slipped inside, shutting the door behind him. “Everything’s all set. No sign of encroaching super villains, Josh hasn’t been distracted by something and wandered off, and I even got Amadeus into a suit. Kirby was chewing up some of the flower arrangements, but now he’s being distracted by Santo. Also, you look good. White suits you.”
Alani looked in the mirror and fought the urge to play with her hair. “I guess.”
“Nervous?”
“Terrified. Why am I doing this?”
Victor scratched his chin and looked at the ceiling as if it held the answer. “Because you love Josh, I hope. And it’s because this is what most couples do when they’ve been together as long as you and Josh have. Second thoughts?”
“Maybe a couple. Gonna try to talk me out of this?”
“Paperwork’s already filed. This is just a formality to please your friends and relations. After all, we’re always looking for an excuse to see if we can get Santo drunk.”
Alani grinned. “Which is always fun.”
Victor checked his watch. “I’d better get into place. See you in ten?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
