“I’m really happy to hear from you, Kate,” Cassie said, smiling at the phone as she cradled it between her ear and her shoulder. “How are you? Have you heard from anyone else lately?”
“Maybe,” Kate said slowly. Cassie felt her joy die a little at Kate’s reluctance to talk about their friends.
“I miss you,” she said. “All of you. You’ll tell them that, right? If you see them, I mean.”
“If I see them,” Kate said noncommittally. “How’s boot camp?”
“It’s okay.”
“I heard you got kidnapped by the Puppetmaster. Are you alright?”
Cassie shook her head, but she smiled a little at the concern in Kate’s voice. “I’m okay. Really.”
