“He’s gotten better and blocking my hexes. We need to step things up before they figure out what we’re up to.”

“What are we doing?” Ricky asked. “Besides stealing stank old junk from libraries and shit.”

“This is kind of pretty,” Jessie said, holding up a ring before slipping it onto her finger.

“My lord Father possessed many of these works,” Kristoff added as he looked at the stacks of books piled up around him, which resulted in a massive amount of eyerolling from everyone but Paul and Tak, who were deeply engaged in a video game. “He did.”

“That doesn’t do us any good now, Kristoff,” Mina sighed.

“You gonna answer the question?” Ricky demanded. “What the fuck are we doing?”

“We’re changing the world,” Kristoff said smugly.

“As long as we can keep our resident heroes off our backs,” Mina added. “Luckily for you all, I have an idea.”

“And will this idea of yours drive your little playmate insane?” Kristoff asked archly.

“Absolutely.”

“No! No no no no no no!” Morrigan shrieked, chasing after Billy like a bat out of hell as he clutched the book he had snatched away from her. he just had to keep her from getting it back... somehow.

“Hulkling, left!” He shouted, and Teddy immediately banked left while Billy dropped down, making Morrigan run right into Kristoff. The two dropped like stones, caught in Cassie’s hand before they could hit the ground.

“Gotchya-ah!” She dropped the two villains as Kristoff’s armor crackled with energy.

“Get us out of here!”

“Not without the book!”

“Screw the book! We’re leaving!”

“But without the book-”

“We’ve got everything else! But if they catch us, we’re done!”

“I can get it back!”

“Get it back later, you daft wench!”

Billy’s lightning bolt barely slid off the shield Morrigan hastily threw up. She growled something that Billy couldn’t hear, and suddenly all that the Young Avengers were fighting were Fix-It’s robot ‘toys’

Billy looked at the book still clutched in his hands and started laughing.

“The book details a ritual,” Billy announced. “It took me forever to get a spell to translate it... I have no idea what language it’s actually written in.”

“What does it say?” Eli prompted impatiently.

“Well, um, it’s supposed to grant the caster near infinite power. Like, instant god-hood. Most of the book describes the pre-ritual... well, rituals. Really boring stuff, actually, until you get to the part about the human sacrifice.” He paused, noticing that everyone was paying close attention now. “Yeah, that got my attention too.”

“Who, and when?” Teddy asked.

“That, I do not know.” Billy opened the book, revealing several torn out pages. “I think it got damaged during the fight, when we were struggling for it. They don’t have all the information, but neither do we.”
