“I can’t believe you actually have a tree house,” Julian said, startling Victor (who would forever more deny that he screamed like a girl). “Are those your comic books?”
Victor very pointedly put the comic book he had been reading away before turning to face Julian, who was hovering at the edge of the balcony. “How’d you find me?”
“Asked your parents.” Julian touched down lightly, the weathered grey wood creaking under his weight. “I like your parents. You know your mom’s baking cookies right now?”
“They’re for the block party,” Victor explained, putting the rest of his comics away. Julian laughed softly and shook his head, prompting Victor to ask him just what it was that he found so funny.
“You have block parties. And tree houses. And a mom who bakes cookies.” He laughed more, sitting down and swinging his legs over the edge. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen my mom in a kitchen.”
“Are you staying for the party?” Victor asked.
Julian looked up at the sky. “I’d like that.”
