Jono traced the tattoo on his granddaughter’s back, a thousand thoughts and emotions squirming in what used to be his gut, before it had gotten blown up for the third time. Didi didn’t wake up, which was just fine with him. Dexter and Jubilee were both asleep, and the little girl always cried when he held her.
He reminded himself that she had no control over what had been done to her in the time before she’d been given to Dexter. It was no more Didi’s fault that she had to bear this mark than it had been his, when he’d had it. She was a clean slate. Innocent.
