“I love my job,” Billy announced happily as he started digging through the long white boxes. He turned to Jen, grinning. “I mean it. I love this job.” He paused, a slight frown on his face, then jotted down a title and issue number on a nearby note pad. “I think I know a shop where we can find some of the missing issues.”
“That’s great,” Jen said, though in truth it came out as more of a question than anything, and a less than enthusiastic one at that. “Real great. You remember that this is temporary, right? Just until Stu gets back from vacation.”
Billy’s face fell slightly, and he sighed. “Yeah, I know… but until then…” The grin returned, and he went back to looking through the old comic books. “Until then I am the master of my own little kingdom.”
“Y’know, it really worries people when you say things like that.”
Billy waved a hand, dismissing the lawyer’s worries. “I’m in a subbasement surrounded by comic books, trying to find the ones the firm doesn’t already have and that aren’t in any collected editions. Oooh…” He reverently held up an old Fantastic Four issue. “I’ve never actually seen this one before. I mean, sure, I saw a few pages someone had scanned and put on the internet, but-” He caught Jen’s look and gave her an apologetic smile. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay. It’s nice to see someone enjoying themselves with this.” She waved an arm at the apparently endless rows of long boxes. “We’ve had interns take one look at this and run screaming.”
Billy returned to the comics. “I came to Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway for the superhuman law. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
