Warren watched his father, standing on the other side of the wall of flames. He seemed so very ordinary when his helmet was off, like it was now. He could have been anyone off the street. Over Baron Battle’s shoulder, Warren could see his mother fighting some guy who’s name he didn’t know.
“Warren, son, if we’re leaving, it has to be now.”
Warren jerked his eyes back to his father’s face. He had wrinkles, and he was getting… pudgy. “What about Mom?”
“Your mother’s always been able to take care of herself. You and me? We’re all each other has.” The old man’s face was so full of hope. “Warren…”
“Dad… I’m all she’s got, too.”
