Jono found Sofia in the kitchen, moving listlessly as she hunted through the cabinets. He watched her for a few moments before starting a pot of coffee. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked.
The girl shook her head and sighed. “I was dreaming of flying again.”
Jono cocked an eyebrow. “You know what that’s supposed to mean, right?”
They were both silent as the coffee percolated, and when it was done, Jono poured Sofia a cup. “I miss it so much,” she mumbled in to the mug. “I loved flying.”
Jono stirred several spoonfuls of sugar in to his coffee and sucked on his teeth. “I had a mate, Everett. Anyone ever tell you about Ev?” She shook her head, and he went on. “He could sue the power of any mutant around him, and he could do things with those powers that… One time, he used my powers to fly. I spent ages trying to figure out how he’d done it. Worst part was that Ev couldn’t even tell me how he did it.” Jono tilted his head back and closed his eyes. “Never did work that out. Always wanted to fly.”
“It’s the most fantastic thing in the world,” Sofia sighed.
