Klara watched the endless stream of motorcars move along the asphalt and fought to catch her breath. The air was as thick as a smokestack, and the noise-! It was like a crowded market, only a hundred times louder. And everywhere she looked, she saw people dressed so oddly, and moving picture boxes set up in storefronts so everyone could see, and all manner of devices that people talked in to or typed on.
It was like something out of adventure story, with a hero flung to a distant planet and left to make his way home through cunning and ingenuity. She had learned to read and speak English from copies of those kinds of stories found in the rubbish until her husband had burned them in the stove when they had run out of coal.
Klara had never imagined that she would find herself living such an adventure.
